SS Cobalt, are you kidding me? I thought since I can't post up on LS1gto.com while I am at work that I would post in this thread where other GTOs play.
I was on my lunch break heading into town, MMOB, to fill my nitrous bottle for the weekend. As I pull up to the stop light before the on ramp to I-30 I see a black SS Cobalt in front of me. I dont think much of it and plan just to pass at the end of the on ramp where it meets the interstate. Well I guess he knew my intent as he sped up towards the end of the on ramp. Not so fast I thought as I drop it into third and fly by him like he is standing still. My exit is 4 miles up the road so I ease down to 75. I look in my rear view mirror and he is moving in and out of traffic to catch up. I guess he didnt get the memo. I exit I-30 onto US 59s and he is riding my butt pretty hard. As the ramp opens to multiple lanes I see him down shift so I am in 3rd and decide to finish this quickly. I proceed to put bus lengths on him and begin to slow and get in the right lane as my exit is coming up. He catches up and takes my same exit. I guess he wants to talk so I motion him into a parking lot and roll down the window. "What do you have done?" Full boltons I reply. "You just kept pulling on me, at least I know your not stock!" I smile and say you are lucky I didn't use my Nitrous or it would have been really ugly. I go about my merry way and fill my bottle for more kills this weekend.
I am assuming by his reactions to my car that he was not stock either. He just couldn't believe I pulled on him that hard. Anyways it was fun and he was a nice kid. Late Teens early 20s.

I took the wifes Cobalt down the 1320 and hit a 14.7 with a passenger. Completely stock. I hear of people hitting 13.7's with a stage 2, exhaust and intake.

I just got my 04' GTO a couple weeks ago so I haven't been able to take it to the track yet, but I'm hoping to at least run in the low 13's the first time out.
My car has mods, some installed by me (80mm TB,TR55s/Accel xtreme wires, and a pair of JBA shorties are in the mail will be on by next weekend) and some by the previous owner (LPE intake, 243 heads, JBA catless mids, and it's tuned) so I'd bet it's capable of high 12's with a good driver.
It feels MUCH faster than my old car which was a stage 4 Saab 9-3 that I managed a 14.8@98 with a horrible 2.444 60ft.

Most stock 04 GTO's I've seen run take the 1/4 in mid to high 13's. Wheels hop is really bad in GTO's.
And no a Cobalt shouldn't be able to take a GTO.

The reason I'm expecting less than steller 1/4mi times is I'm coming from driving a fwd turbo car for the last ~4 years, so it might take me a bit to get used to launching the GTO at the track.

My STOCK 6.0 M-6 beat the **** out of my friends' little brother's cobalt ss with a pulley and a few bolt's so they are not faster than GTO's they may think they are but they are not. My car stock ran a 13.008 in the 1/4 his cobalt ran mid to high 14's consistently.My car now has full spintech exhaust, custom intake, and a Lou's shortstick, I haven't gotten it tuned yet because I am waiting on the cam and other goodies.
SRT-4's are another story, those little bastard MAKE some power with a few tweaks and mods.

nice...i had a cobalt SS owner ask me if it was a V8 or a V6 recently...i proceeded to start my car. I think he got the message, cause when i asked him if he wanted to find out he just shook his head and drove away
