thinking about buying a 04 GTO
My car will be sold tomarrow, and that means its time to get a new car. I deffinately am considering an 04 GTO, its got the sport appearance package, and is red. Its also an M6, with 40k miles. What are the common problems/flaws with these cars. Im use to the LT1 fbodys ive had 2 of them. I could tell you all pretty much anything about the LT1 cars, but im clueless about the GTO's. And by the way, the current owner had it on the dyno and it made 322HP and 343 Torque at the wheels..I dont know a whole lot about LS1's but it seems a little high especially for just having a K&N airfilter. So any input would be great.

The GTO is a great car. Nice interior, great ride, nice looks and great motor. The weaknesses are the weak-*** front suspension, lack of rim/tire options, expensive aftermarket parts, weight, weak axle and wheel bearings.
Before you buy this car, you need to check the front end wheel shake at 70+ mph. I am having a bitch of a time fixing it.

I bought an 04 and would not look back. I am putting a twin turbo kit on it for 6k and will be at 600rwhp until I forge the bottom end. If you dont want to spend the extra cash on the 05/06 dont worry about it. You can easily find hood etc elsewhere. Good find with the SAP package those pieces are expensive and rare now adays.

And why is that? Let me guess "cause it has 50 more horse than the 04" thats what you were gonna say wasn't it. Dont listen to guys like LT1-Dan. If you have the chance to get an 04 get it. Same goes with the 05-06. You dont have to do much to an 04 to hang with the 05-06's Maybe a header swap or a tune thats it. Theres more aftermarket for the LS1 and oh yeah the 04's are gonna be worth way more money in 20 years than the 05-06's

He is probably speculating that because they were the first year the GTO was reintroduced. Buy the car and enjoy it, don't plan on it being worth a bundle later on down the road. It is the single worst investment you can buy. Drive the car and have fun. If you want investments call a broker. Even if you bought say a 67 Camaro Convertible for the original sticker of $4100 you could sell it today for $50,000. Invest in a mutual fund and the same 4k would be $300,000.

Also with 322/343, this car most likely has a tune as well. My 04 only has a SLP TB and LM1 CB plus a tune, makes 321/340 to the wheels.
Good luck with the GTO, you won't be disappointed!

I have had two 04 GTO's and the first one bought new put down 315/322 stock. The second one with 42k miles on the clock at the dyno put down 309/328 with K&N CAI and Flowmaster cat back. So those numbers are not out of reach (atleast the hp numbers anways). I have since put PS LT on but have not gotten back to the dyno for my tune yet.
The aftermarket prices are cheaper for the 04 anyway. Don't wont to spend $700 on rotors
And as a plus you can make money parting out the SAP if you don't like it
