Default LS1 Gas Mileage

As you know, the 1998-2002 M6 F-bodies have an estimated mileage of 19-city and 27-highway printed on their documents. But what I'd like to know is if this estimation comes from both the skip shift feature and skipping gears (1-3-5, 1-2-4, etc.) in general? Or are you supposed to be able to achieve the estimated gas mileage without gear skipping for a stock vehicle?

What's your average city mileage?

I get 20mpg in a modded 6 speed lt1 mixed city and highway driving. When i had my 465rwhp z06 i got 22mpg average, 28mpg on the highway. Neither has skip shift. Those estimates arent really that great anyway.

those estimates are not right.. highway is very close but low.. city is way low...

they were using skip shift..

the average m6 owners i believe get about 28/24

i got 26/22 in my 323 geared a4... and 28/22 in my m6

i would guess that the "estimate" is achieved while using the factory skip shift, and using every gear other than that.

how hard you accelerate and if you use the engine to slow the car will affect your city mileage more than if you skip shift or not.

my cammed engine with stock rear gears gets about 16-18mpg on strictly short trip city driving. all trips are <7miles. not a tone of stop/go but all short runs and <50mph.

i tend to have a heavy foot around town too, just having fun on my 10 min commute to work

I check every tank of gas and the worst mpg the car ever got was the first tank of gas...16mpg. As a stock/bolt on car the average was 23.5 mpg normal driving. Best highway 32.8mpg. After heads and cam 20.5 to 21.5 mpg. Best high 28 mpg.

Rule of thumb...if your sitting in traffic not moving your mpg is zero. That's what really kills mpg in the city.

After watching mpg on HPTuners I could see almost a 3 to 4 mpg drop with a 1% change in throttle position. On the gas these things really suck the fuel (like 9 to 11 mpg) but going down hill you're looking at 50 mpg depending on your speed, and if you take it out of gear you will see 80mpg if you're going fast. Big jumps like a 40mpg here, a 35 mpg reading there, and a 45mpg there help to bring the average # up. Even strictly highway, I get 12 to 16 with the cruise on going up a virginia mountain interstate. Throttle position is the biggest killer, NOT rpm. I drove from VA to AL and got 32 MPG by keeping my foot out of it (cruse at 72mph), coasting, and drafting - basically watching my MPG Gauge and histogram on HPT. BTW, this is with 4.10s and a cam.

Ive done this test.

I average about 24 mpg while specifically high way cruising about 220 miles one way w/ the A/C, no real need to skip gears since I didnt do much shifting. I cruised about 75-80 all the way up and the car weighs 3950 w/ me in it.

Lid, headers, Cats, and cat back at the time, with stock tune.

If the car had been lighter and I lean tune put into it, it would have been much better.

As for city, I always like to blast with the car so I dont think I have gotten a decent gas milage.

If I were to do it, Id go from 1st to 4th, then 4th to 6th @ about 40 mph and never go above 2k rpms and that would produce optinum gas milage

With numbers in my sig the 346 got a best of 34.5 mpg on my trip back to Detroit from Dallas in 2006. Actual gas mileage regularly is 30+ mpg, provided I keep my foot out of it. Great trip car. The 34.5 mpg is probably from having the cruise set at 70 mph in 6th and not having to hit the brakes for over 3 hours and then not needing to hit the brakes again until Missouri. Its amazing what the cruise control can do with a well tuned motor that has an asp ud pully and Meziere EWP.

Hopefully the new 402 doesn't kill the economy of the car LOL, but the way gas prices are now who cares. If and when gas goes sky high again I am sure we'll all start caring again.

I run 18-20 in mixed driving, about 2/3 in town, 1/3 highway. At a somewhat steady cruise (80-90), I knock down 24-25.
