Default LS1 Miata hits the track for the first time - video

I finally got my miata-based LS1 race car out on the track for the first time yesterday. We ran at Infineon in Sonoma, CA, and the car ran flawlessly.

Here's some in-car from my 3rd session on track:

http://www.vimeo.com/10494561

Lot's of improvements to come in the form of proper suspension (spec miata suspension on there now) and aero.

We were running 15x8 wheels with 225 Hankook 214 C51's.

Cheers,

Dean

Car weighs 2575 with me in it and full of fuel. I haven't had it on the dyno yet since we finished it, but I'm thinking about 320HP at the wheels. Stock T56 and 8.8 rear.

It was SERIOUSLY fun on the track! Can't wait to get the suspension dial in - then the car will be a contender in the ST2 racing class.

Cheers,

Dean

That thing looks like a freakin blast! Infineon looks like a lot of fun too. That would be a really really long haul from Atlanta.... maybe someday.

scratch that, just saw your starting grid spot and know what group you're in. I'm at work, but I'll watch later, I was in the Silver Camaro SS on Sat in the group after you. I kept hearing you go by wondering WTF was this miata so loud, and not a 4 cyl miata loud

Great job on the car! I've been following your build thread and I've been impressed with the work. Watching your video gives me a little extra inspiration to get my racecar swap finished up!

I couldn't watch the whole video, your gear choice is different corner:corner from mine in my camaro and corvette i was getting confused and starting to over think it, but that's what a difference of about 500 lbs will do on track

I take it you're running stock 3.42 gears? What times were you guys doing?

If I can get my vette out of the shop any time soon I'll be seeing you at the track. T1 runs with ITE in SFR, and if my tuner can get everything right (pretty sure he can ), I'll be out in ST2 as well this year

My gear selections were somewhat exploratory, anyway, since the car is to new to me.

We're running stock gears in the T56 but 3.55 in the rear.

My best lap time was a 1:49.9, with a little traffic (I think the first full lap in this video). The rest of the laps were in the 1:51-1:53 range, depending on traffic and how sideways I am

It would be great to see some additional ST2 cars locally before I dive in with the sharks at Miller in September at the NASA Nationals.

Keep in touch.

Great times for a 1st time out in it on suspension that needs work! What brakes do you use, the stock miata calipers? or is there something you can do under those little wheels to help make up for the extra weight. or are you actually under the factory weight? never looked at miata weights before

Looks like the Runoffs are out of reach for me this year, so hopefully I'll be able to get all my ducks lined up and my power/weight in order for NASA and maybe get out to MMP

Thanks. I was very happy with how the car performed right out of the gate.

For brakes, the front rotors are substantially bigger than stock. They are from a VW G60 Corrado - about 11.75 x .85" Calipers are Wilwood 4 piston. In the back, I'm using larger brakes from stock - the Sport option brakes from a 2001 miata.

I wasn't pushing hard under braking at all, but that being said, the brakes showed no signs of fade, boiling fluid, etc. Once I have the opportunity to run them hard in a race setting, I'll know what I'm up against. I believe this package, along with well thought out cooling ducts, should be sufficient.

The car weighs 2575 with me in it right now.

Hope to see you at Miller!

Cheers,

Dean
