Default Thought some might be interested in my splitter development.

I needed to add some downforce after an event last year saw 168mph on an uphill straight cresting a hill. Not fun. No brakes above 140 and no steering above 150.

So we decided to build a real splitter set up that connects to stock locations and not damage to the stock body on the Formula.

It was tested to 160 mph and allowed us to brake 200ft later and above 160mph we had brakes and steering, below 130mph it did not seem to make a noticeable difference.

Very interesting! You said it connects to the "stock locations", could you elaborate on that? Any fabbing required? Also will your design also work on non-formula cars?

Very cool, is this something you plan on producing and selling? If so you already have one order ready

It has been discussed. The tricky part will be that we shaped some PVC plate to fill the gap and stiffen the connection. On the Formula we have a shape now. That can be scanned and possibly recreated with 3D printing or CNC'd. I did that all by hand, it had hours into the shaping and fitting. The sheet metal and laminate is all done now and could be recreated in only a few hours on a CNC router.

So we need to get a TA and Camaro to develop the fillers for them.

As for the fab needed, I did fab a few parts by hand, but they would be easy to make standard parts. I drilled 2 holes in the bumper mount and one in a part I had previously made for my oil cooler. I will need to come up with a simple way to replicate that on a stock car.

You can see the 2.5" of PVC plate stacked on the right side.

You can see the one verticle aluminum part that goes to the bumper mount and the first .5" PVC plate and how it is hollowed out as well as the aluminum hex hangers.

This is the other aluminum strap that goes to the other bumper mount hole. This is where I drilled one additional hole to lock up the strap and stop any movement. The nut and bolts below are to tie the plastic body to the bumper support. So it is all metal holding the splitter. The plastic body is not strong enough. The splitter itself is a laminate, not a piece of ABS for decoration. A real splitter needs to be stiff and take 100 of pounds of load.

As far as cooling goes it seemed ok. We did have some cooling issues, but think it was not related to the splitter. I have not worked on the car since finishing the 5 day race on this past Wednesday.

So the answer is it is possible. I have 95% of the data in CAD files. It needs tweaking, but we were happy with the results.

You also added a wing, right? Notice any difference with that? I'm surprised you don't notice much of a difference under 130. I've had my Blainefab lexan spoiler through a kink at about 110 and the back end was absolutely planted. But maybe the splitter isn't as effective as the spoiler is. Idk

Our issue has been the front lifting. A spoiler only makes it worse. We needed the front end to stick so we could brake and turn. No kidding, the front brakes would lock with just a slight touch of the pedal above 140mph. Steering you could almost swing the wheel back and forth with no change in direction above 150mph.

Mopsort/Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is supposed to be the fastest track in North America. Best lap average of 138mph. It can be fast in places.

Calabogie has a 2000ft straight.

Shannonville also has a very long straight that is used for 1/4 mile drags too.

Under 130 mph we had no issues hanging with cars with Aero upgrades, above that was a different issue. 90% was the front end. The rear was to balance that a little and for looks. These 3 are the fastest tracks in Ontario. 165 plus at Mosport, 150 mph at Calabogie and 145mph at Shannonville.

I made a similar splitter on my RX-7 out of alumalite and I could tell above 100mph.... also added a 67" rear wing with Gurney lip which definitely I could feel. Prior to installing these I could roast the tires for 100ft+ over crests going 100mph.... now it stays nice and planted. When I took these pics I installed the rear end plates upside down.... doh

The entry into my radiator is fully ducted already. I would like to do the exit ducted to the hood, make a more aggressive front splitter (wider/longer), and bigger multi tier wing to create some real downforce.
I'm dropping about 150lbs from the car, adding 175hp, plus upgrading to 14.25" brakes for 2016. Hoping to test finally in late July/early Aug.

I remember at VIR I was hitting 138 down the back straight and it was a little scary. The front end got very light. I thought the fix would be to make it a front breather with an air dam.

Now you have me thinking about the splitter like you made. But with a Camaro front end, I'm not sure it'd work. It would probably have to be a splitter with a front breather.

Some additional pics. A couple show the Banshee spoiler size and depth. I like that it follows the side window lines.

Not a one. No time, I even had the Contour with me, but have not messed with it in 5 years.

We were so far behind being ready it really sucked. I like being prepared, but it did not happen that way.

I know I'm feeling. Every time I tell myself that this is the last time I'm going to rush....as I'm loading the car on the car into the trailer at midnight.

Been drooling over this splitter on FRRAX. It looks great and I'm impressed with its functionality. I really like how you incorporated feed air to the radiator as well.

I was thinking about maybe fabing up some canards to help with some front downforce as well as helping airflow away from the front wheels. Might go well with the splitter.

Man I really like what you've done to the car. I really like the spoiler, it's perfect. And the splitter looks like it belongs on the car.

I've been looking at the nose of the Camaro, it looks like it'd be a little harder to do.

I am betting the mount points are exactly the same. The 3D part would be different. We are looking at a way of making those with a 3D printer.

You have the advantage of some stock front breathing available.

I am working on a local Camaro to try it on.

What kind of cooling issues did you have? Also, how'd you make the splitter itself? I was thinking about getting 6litet's splitter and making it more functional later. But I'm not sure it's strong enough.

Quick Reply: Thought some might be interested in my splitter development.
