Hey guys I'm about to start a turbo setup for my 5.3 which has 9:8 compression . I'm starting to learn about turbos. I'm thinking of buying one of this turbos because I've read that 72mm turbo would be a good size for me ..but this 3 turbos are 72mm but they have different AR numbers .. which one would be best for me .. i want to stay with pump gas and this is a street car. Here are they pics of the ones I'm looking at .. My budget is no more than 800 for the turbo it's self. If you have a different turbo you recommend please do. Thank you in advance .

I wouldn't run any of those on a 5.3. Too small for me. Call a couple of the sponsors on here? At a price point of $800 or less your probably going to go with an import product. You should have posted this in the Forced Induction section. You should look through that section and read some of the 5.3 build threads over there and you will see what people are using. Commonly used at that price point are On3 Performance, I know they are a sponsor here, so maybe they would be a good choice. I also see some VS racing stuff that is under your price point. Most of the Precision, Turbonetics, Borg Warner, and Garrett units, the right size for your engine will be over that $800, unless you can find a quality 2nd hand piece where someone is upgrading. One domestic turbo in your price range would be the Turbonetics Hurricane series, you could get a Benita for <$800 which would outperform those.

i cant help with the selection, but unless you have like a **** ton of space Id stay away from the holsets. the hx55 is literally the size of a basketball and weighs like 50 lbs.

Most guys run a. On3 76 or 78mm on the 5.3.

Or u can run a t6 setup and run a s475 borg warner. Both will get the job done. But the borgs are an awesome turbo and quality for the money. I run a s480 on a stock 5.3. Its laggy for sure. So definately go with a 76.

Go used Turbonetics.
I'm on my second used Turbonetics unit and have had zero issues.
I started with TC7868 Benita and moved up to a T7875, both ball bearing units.
The TC7868 is a little small for the 5.3 but spool will be quick and be fun on the street and can be had used for less than $800.
The T7875 is larger in both physical size and HP potential and if your sharp you may be able to get one for for $800 or $900 lightly used.
The T7875 will be slightly slower spooling but will make plenty of power and still be a blast to drive.

On the Turbonetic Benita there is two options for the AR (.81) or (.96) what would be optimal?

65-68mm turbine wheels are weak sauce. New technology turbos all use larger wheels for a reason.

VS racing's new billet 78/75 would be my choice over anything with a 68mm or smaller turbine wheel.

Is the quality of the VS Racing with the billet wheel 78/75 pretty much the same as the On3 78mm turbo? I'm looking for a balance of quality and performance. That's why I was leaning towards the Turbonetics Benita

I'm with Forcefed, I ran the TC7868 and the spool was like a light switch and topped out at about 5,500 rpm.
The T7875 is way better, makes more power at the same boost, power comes on much more linear which is nice for a street tire car and I can run it up past 6,000 rpm.
Either the On3 or VS unit with a 7575 configuration is ideal or if you can find a used T7875 but you'll be in the $800 range for one of those.

I'd run the VSRacing 7875 billet personally. I run the boost labs 11 blade billet 75/75 on my 4.8 (low compression) and it easily continues making efficient boost up even past 7,000 RPM.

The one you found on Ebay for $825 isn't a 7875, its a 7868. I agree that the Turbonetics T7875 is a much better turbo, that's what I run. I paid $1200 for my mine, best deal I could find. Only reason I didn't recommend it to you was because I couldn't imagine buying one for $800 or less that doesn't have something wrong with it. The Turbonetics T7875 costs quite abit more because it is only available in ball bearing, and Turbonetics is quite fond of their new F1-75 turbine wheel. I agree with the other posters, the Benita will run out of breath, but it is north of 600 hp before it does on a 5.3. It will come on like a light switch, has a warranty, and is known to be a reliable unit. Not all bad. You can make more power for less with one of the asian manufactured turbos. I've been tempted to buy one. I have not heard of people getting high mileage out of them yet though. Maybe 20 or 30K is the most I've heard of. I expect some people have gotten more, just I haven't heard of it. I know people who have ran a Turbonetics for over 150K miles. If I were to go asian, it would be the VS billet 7875 for $556. I don't think they have much of a warranty though, I was told it was 30 days from purchase. In most cases the build isn't even complete by the time it expires. Having said this, I'm not hearing of people having problems with them though.

Best of luck with your build. Oh and if you do decide to go Benita go for the 0.96 AR, stay away from the 0.81 it will choke it up even worse.
