Default 9.82 @ 134 MPH Stock 5.7L/346ci LS1 Short-Block!

We've had several threads going in other forums, but I wanted to post the results here, too. We claimed the quickest heads/cam car record last weekend at the NMCA LSX Shootout in Memphis, TN. The car is a '98 Z28, naturally-aspirated, 2,858 lb. with driver, stock 346 short-block with ARP rod bolts, PRC 215cc cylinder heads, MS4 camshaft, TH200 trans, & 8" race converter. The car ran three 9.8x passes last Saturday, the first and last passes being a 9.82 and the 2nd pass being a 9.87. The car had a 1.275 60' on the first pass and a spinning 1.32 60' on the last pass. The last 9.82 was in the heat of the day! We were going for a low 9.7x pass Sunday morning, but when the car landed from a pretty good wheelie it broke the steering rack in half.

Here's a link to the original post in the LSX Shootout forum:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...1000289&page=4

Here's a link to the last 9.82 run on Saturday:

We're going to head to San Antonio Raceway in a few weeks for some better air so we can bump the record again by a few tenths.

The car is naturally-aspirated. This is why we went for the record at the LSX Shootout so everyone could check the car out. The 1.27 60' comes from a well-built converter that was speced for our engine. Our 1.27 isn't that crazy considering NHRA Stock Eliminator LS1 cars have to run stock heads and still manage high 1.2x 60' times! It's all about the combination, and the lighter you can get the car the more it will benefit you for ET everywhere.

What sort of converter and gears are you running? You guys kind of want me building me 93 up to challenge you guys. Granted I don't have the money for all of the suspension / rear end right now. It'll be light though, around a 2700 lb race weight with AC and PS.

We've always had good results from Turbo Action for N/A converters. If I wasn't so busy I'd build a H/C LS1 setup from a LT1 chassis for myself, they seem to be more plentiful as cheap rollers.

The TSP car has 4.30 gearing in a 12-bolt, a little too much for the current trap speeds but when the shortblock can be replaced for <$500; you care a little less about the RPM it runs at. I think we'd be better off with 4.10's with the H/C engine and using the 4.30's for a cam-only setup.

If you can get it that light with stock suspension components, I wouldn't buy all the suspension parts either. LCA's, RR Airbag, Torque Arm, Relocation brackets and some front QA1's would probably be adequate at a minimum.

Yep we have a pallet of 241 heads, not to mention the plethora of stock heads laying around from Heads/Cam swaps that I can't get customers to take with them. It's an option for a rainy day here.

I believe we're shifting at 7000rpm and crossing the traps at 7400-7500 or so. I don't mind running it higher myself. That's about the only reason I'd want to change the gearing though; when we hit some good air it'll probably MPH a little more, in turn more RPM.

Thanks!

Step 1: Unbolt and remove EVERYTHING!
Step 2: Put back what you need.

That's about it.

I got the whole car for basically $900. All that was wrong with it was a freeze plug in the block that leaked. I'm parting out the whole LT1 / 4l60 combo now. I've already taken out 307.509699 lbs and stand to lose another 120ish switching to an LS1, TH350, and 9.5 inch converter.

The converter I have is a PTC 3800 that I'll be putting in for a while. It's more of a tighter nitrous converter, but I got it for $250 basically brand new so it was too good of an offer to pass up. I checked out those Turbo Action converters. Do you just run an off the shelf 8 inch? I noticed the stall speeds were around 5300. Tire wise I'm guessing you are running similar to a 28x10.5? W tire?

I can take another 230ish lbs out spending a little bit of money. That should put it around a 2960 raceweight. I think it should run pretty hard for having around $3500 in it.
