Default Help choosing rear gears

I am currently running a 9" w/spool 5.42 gear with a powerglide 1.76 planetaries.I only have 1/8 mile tracks close and have never ran 1/4 mile. The combo works great on motor in the 1/8th.Ran a 6.29 @ 108.43 on a 100 shot leaving on motor and bringing in the spray after .7 sec.I am going to race on pinks all out in April, don't really want to spray it in the 1/4,I would rather run on motor being as I have never ran 1/4 mile before.I have two other gears, a 4.10 and a 4.56 and can,t decide which to use.Any help would be appreciated.

Need to look at a couple of other factors: shift rpms, finish rpms; weight; rear tire size.

Can't compare my present set-up; but previously on nitrous: pushed 650hp range, ran 30" tires; weight 3250; 6800rpm through the traps: I ran 4.30's was running out of gear.. figured 4.10's would get us through the traps.

Here's a couple of calculators to help:

Thanks David, I was just looking @ your fquick garage trying to compare.I shift @ 7200,would like to finish with enough room to spray it when I get ready.I run a 28x10.5 S.As far as the weight The scales were broken at the track the last time out.Just guessing I'm sure it weighs at least 3500lbs.

By the calculators:

145mph - 7200rpm finish - 28" tires: 4.10 are your best
145mph - 7200rpm finish - 30" tires: 4.4? -

IMO with your best choice - even on spray - would be the 4.10's. Unless you want to go with 4.30's, than they should work. I "think" the 4.56 would be a little steep.

If you are just spraying 100, I'd think 4.10's. If you were all motor i'd think 4.30 or 4.56.

If you have a good converter the 4.10 should be fine with the 100 shot. Dont forget in your calculations that you will have 7-10% converter slip but if you can go through at 7200 then the 4.10 should get you around 140mph with no problem.

Good luck on Pinks, I'll be there too..

Thanks everyone for the advice.I decided to go with the 4.56 and run on motor in the 1/4.I think the 4.56 will be better for the 1/8 with the spray, since I'll be mostly racing the 1/8 mile.I really appreciate the help.KP I guess I'll see you at Rockingham in April.

I have never been to that track so I dont know the pit arrangements, when its get a little closer I'll shoot you a PM and if we get there around the same time we should be able to pit together. Going to try to hook up with Rob with the vette as well.

KP I've never been there either, but that sounds great.
Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice.I took it to the track yesterday with the 4.56 gears,6.66@ 105 1.46 60' on motor.6.08 @114.2, 1.31 60' leaving on 30hp bringing the other 70 hp in .5 sec later.Everything worked great. Was going to try another pass leaving on 50hp bringing the other 50hp in .3 sec later, but there was some driver error.ha ha.I'm confident we can get it in the 5's just like it sits with a 100 shot.I've got my front shocks set on 10,limiters on, and the rears set on 5.Any suggestions anyone?

Nice run. What rpm did you finish? Glad things worked out for you.

Being an ex-nitrous huffer, this is what I used to do: (assuming you have an adjustable shock) set front at 3, rears at 6; shoot 200 shot (TNT wet system) right out of the hole. Best on a stock bottom ended car with h/c (410rwhp/400+rwtq) and a 200 shot (600+rwhp): 10.08, 130+, with a 1.32 60'. I launched off the t/b with the nitrous activation run through the t/b - release the t/b activated the nitrous. Worked pretty good until I put the car on the bumper with only a 150 shot.

I believe you would be able to shoot at least the full 100 shot out of the hole without any problems. You add another 50 shot .3 out - easily.

Good luck

David

David,
Thanks for all the help.I'm not sure what rpm I went through the lights at,everything happens so fast and I only got to make two passes on the spray. My shift light was set at 7k so I know it was below that.I have the same set up as far as the nitrous goes, except NX kit, release the t/b and it's on!I have QA-1 adjustable shocks and I'll try your settings next weekend.I finally got a weight on the car Friday.#3,240 w/o me in it ,#3,430 w/ me in it.Thanks again for all of the help.
