Default TPI 350 Power

My friend just had a new motor installed in his '87 IROC, and he thinks its the ****. I was curious about how much power is actually going to the wheels.
-Stock ZZ4 Crate Motor, these are 350's right? He keeps calling it a 383
-Edelbrock HI FLOW TPI intake/runner system
-BBK Racing throttle body
-Edelbrock Ceramic Coated headers
-Stock T5 Trans
-Stock differential w/ 2:73 gears??

He thinks it will make 400 HP on a dyno, I say 350 or less. What do you think?

The factory hp #s for the zz4 was at the flywheel with a carb and it was 355hp and 405 torque. With the long runner intake he might be losing a little hp and his torque is coming on earlier and might be a lil more than the factory rating.

400 hp on a chssis dyno is a no go. You are more correct, he is somewhere around 350 hp at the wheels. Those 2.73's are killing him, he needs to put sum 3.42's back there.

If he put on a Holley stealth ram it would have a better powerband.

I have seen a tpi vette with one of these crate motors with headers run 12.60 at the track on some stickies

355 HP is rated w/ no acc. drive as well. Figure in that and drivetrain loss... I bet it does mid 200's at best (250-260), maybe 280-ish on a generous dyno. TPI isn't know for big HP #'s on the dyno. They are dump truck motors and make crap tons of TQ.

Now they do have a ZZ383 crate engine, it is rated 425 HP. Possibly he has that in his car? That would be even more choked up than a ZZ4 with the TPI on it.

Ya thats what I thought, the TPI would choke down the power vs. a single plane and nice carb. He had a 305 TPI stock, blew it up eventually (high miles) and his dad bought the motor and goodies all brand new from summit, and had a shop install it all. Im not sure what gears are in it, I was guessing. It might already have 3:42's in it? Anyways, he doesn't know what it is, he says its a ZZ4 crate AND a 383, so I need to find out from his dad for sure what it is. He talks about how it makes 400 HP or more, and I call BS. I told him to do and LS1 or LS2, and a six speed, especially if dad is buying. Anyways, I can't wait to get him up on a dyno to see what happens.

If he goes easy on it it will last for awhile. It wasnt designed to handle that much torque.

TQ + T5 + 10bolt + traction = towed home

as stated if you are gentle with this combo it will be alright for a while
not to be trusted though!

Haha I thought it might at least hit 300 at the wheels. Maybe not. He does need to upgrade to a stronger drivetrain

Coming from a fellow thirdgen guy, im thinking he will have 300rwhp at best. IF he replaced cam, heads ect then its a whole new ballgame, but everybody is correct, TPI kills horsepower....go HSR!!

holley stealth ram
kind of like lt1 intake, brings the hp curve in to the higher rpms and doesn't choke the motor

The ZZ4 engine is 350ci, if he thinks its a 383 then he's full of crap or he got lied to.

I had a ZZ4 clone, with the ZZ4 cam and ported ZZ4 heads. It made 282 RWHP and 380 RWTQ thru a T5 transmission. It ran a best of 13.23 @ 107.50

what do you run, any time slips?

i have had many 5.7s w/ T5 set ups and broke many trannies granted i am VERY HARD on trannies when racing... you must have some serious magic workin for you! i tried everything known i had a very nice clutch that really upset the T5 as well.

does it have Fastburns or L98's???? Its hard to tell by looking at the intake bolt pattern because Fastburns use both.
