wanting to do a 572- tall deck?
So I am looking into stroking a 454 block into a 572- is it mandatory to use a tall deck block- I am really just learning and trying to outgrow my novice status on engine building so let me know if I'm way off.

Think that is a 4.5 inch bore and 4.5 inch stroke, the 454 is in no way going to make a 472, max bore is 4.25 stock and can be bored up to .120 or so some times and the stroke can go up to 4.25 or a bit more. You can get a bit over 500 CI from a 454 though.
And yes, the 572 is a tall deck block. You can however make a 540 or 565 ci big block from the right 502 block and being a short deck, which has the 4.5 bore and some can be a 4.6 inch bore.

.
With a standard 454 block, a 520 is pushing it, and it better be well preped.
With a 427 TD, a 535 is pushing it. Yes, some people do force more out of either one,
and claim they ran great & lasted forever. I have been around a day or two,
and it's stupid to spend a bunch of dough on something so far over designed application.
If you want to do it right, and have any chance of getting it to last and run what you want,
you must get a big bore block. If you tell us what the heck you're trying to do, we can help better,
if we know the application, HP goal, budget ect.
I have built several 500+ inchers using a 9.8 block. From 1200-1650 HP, so I might have some ideas that might help.
I have a 557" in one of my cars now.

thanks for all the info guys! I want to build a 572, hoping ot put down 800 to the wheels on 93 octane. when I am done with the motor- could take a while as I want to build it myself, I am going to put it in a roller of my choosing. budget is negotiable as time is up in the air.
