Default 454 fuel pump not working.

Ok first were all mechanical fuel pumps the same for a 454? And is there any guide to installing one? I will list how I did it step by step, maybe I did something wrong.

1. Took off old pump
2. Undid the plug and pushed the rod all the way in with my hand.
3. Quickly put the new pump in and screwed the plug all the way back in till it stopped(maybe this is where I went wrong?)

I tested the pump with a cup of gas and it wasn't working. Could I just have gotten a faulty pump?

Can anyone help? I would really like to get my 73 Camaro running.

Could be the cam lobe is wiped out. Pull the pump, hold the rod up with a screwdriver and have someone spin the engine over to see if it is moving up and down.
