Default 1997 Chevy 1500 "bad mechanic job"

Wass up Chevy Lovers!
I'm in some deep waters right now, I own a 1997 Chevy C1500 pick up which I just began building into a "sleeper." I personally was going to do all the work however due to my work schedule had to go with a mechanic who had done great work for me in the past.
Anyways... I called summit racing spoke with their techs told them exactly my plans for my truck they told me to start by upgrading CAM, suggested I went with a COMP Roller CAM since my chevy small 350 block its VORTEC. My mechanic got it installed as well he installed a timing chain kit, and a high performance vortec distributor.
PROBLEM:
Just got my truck back a few hours ago RPM's are at 500 its sounds like it wants to turn off, engine seems to idle just fine but when you drive it lacks power, also upon reaching a stop RMPs drop under 500 engine sounds like it's going to shut down but somehow revives. I can hear CAM working it sounds really nice but driving it not fun at all, what can the problem be?
My guess is its way off timing.

Mechanic also installed new spark plugs and wires.(he purchased from local auto store)

I would guess the cam timing is off as well. Only way to find out is to tear it back apart.
