Default th350 vs 700r4

Hey guys, needing some input from people who have run both transmissions. I'm building a procharged small block chevy in a 87 c10 shortbed truck. It has a built 8.5" rear end, 3.73 gear, and 28" tall tire. Truck weighs 3750 with me in it. Shooting for 500-550 hp to the tire. Wondering what transmission would be best to use. It currently has a stock th350 trans with a shift kit and 3200 stall. In the corner of my garage i have a fully built Finish Line Transmissions 700r4 with a 3600 stall. Wondering if I should sell the 700r4 in order to build the th350? Or should i swap in the 700r4 and sell the th350?

Is the 700r4 a pain to get the shift points set up since it shifts based on a cable?
I was told the 700r4 trans has a really short 1st gear, maybe that would help get the heavy truck out of the hole quickly?

Dont really care about gas mileage or highway cruising RPM....just wondering which trans can take more abuse and make the truck faster in the quarter mile.

Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Put a TH400 in it and be done. You'll be able to keep your converter and have an inherently stronger trans. Just my $.02.

Great idea, not sure why that option slipped my mind lol. Is the th400 bigger or longer in size than the th350, or is it just the internals that are different?

The TH400 is about 1.5" longer than a TH350 and about .5" shorter than a 700R4 iirc. The case is larger in diameter than both and has way beefier internals than both.

TH350 has at least two different length tail cones so make sure you measure. Not sure on the 400 but it will be longer. It has a different shaped pan as well. If you don't care about mileage then either a 350 or 400 will fit the bill. Some folks will use a built T350 because it you lose less horsepower through it. If you want a strong transmission and over drive then a 4L80 is probably a better way to go since it is basically a 400 with a 4th gear. If the 700R4 is built right it will do just fine as well. Setting up the TV cable is no big deal. If this is going to be just a 1/4 mile blaster then consider a powerglide and a change in the rear gear to 4.10 or more.

Thanks for all the info. The truck is just going to be driven around town and to the track so I don't really need an overdrive trans. Right now I'm leaning towards the th400 since its tried and true but im not 100% yet. The 700r4 I have in the garage is pretty well built.....Anyone know how much each transmission weighs? Not that its going to matter much but just curious.
