How can I go faster for cheaper BBC or SBC
#2
Fast and cheap do not go hand-in-hand. You can do a budget build up with either a SBC or BBC. The initial expense of the BBC will be more but on a budget. However, it could handle more nitrous, via the volume of the cylinders, as compared to a SBC.
I built my small block to handle tons of spray (read: studded, forged, etc.). It was sprayed with a 200+ (cheater kit) quite a few times. The same BBC may take 300+ without blinking.
If you plan to only race a few times a year, SBC and spray is the way to go. If you race every weekend, nitrous gets expensive. If you plan to make the highest HP on a planned budget, then BBC and spray is the answer. IMO...

Yep. I have figured out fast and cheap dont go hand in hand. I also figured out you can go faster cheaper when I got into modding with my SS. I have tons of money in my car and if I had known better in the beginning I could have done it much cheaper.
I appreciate your responses. Keep them coming.

What ET goal are you looking to get too? I have a proven bbc combo with nitrous that will take a 3600 lb car to the low 10's, high 9's. With reasonable off the shelf parts. It only needs to be sprayed with 150-200 and will last for a good, long time.

My 95' weighed 3400 with the BB in her, and with a 325 shot on a single plate
We never ran a 1/4 mile with it, but doing a little math with our 1/8th mile times she shoulda coulda woulda been in the mid 8's.

Someone said there's no replacement for displacement. BBC offers you the most hp for the least $. You can probably buy 1000 hp for $15,000 to $18,000.

X-factor................ unless you are referring to a bare block and a very strong guy? a bare block could be picked up, but nobody could pick up a complete motor by "hand"!!!! i weighed my LS1 with all accessories and headers, and it was 510lbs. can you say aluminum block too?!?!?!
later,
Dave
oh yea, used BBC from someone who is changing their setup, and spray it. that will probably be your biggest bang for the buck.

If you are starting from scratch I'd build a big block. The initial expensive might be more but the rewards/chances to expand and go faster are better than a small block. I stayed small block b/c it's what I know more about, and I already owned a bunch of things that were small block specific.
Good luck whatever route you choose!

I agree with the BBC route. A bone stock 454 short block with good bolts, good balance job and forged pistons will take 6-700 hp with and rev to 7k for many seasons. They are very strong blocks. Better rods will allow you to throw a 250 shot at it for a long time to come. The 454 in my sig is an extremely mild, stock headed, hydraulic cammed, wouldn't rev past 6k if you pushed the clutch in at WFO, cheap *** type of engine ... and I fully expect to go 11's this coming season. With a cam change to a solid lifter setup so it'll rev a little more I expect to go deep low/mid 11's. I've probably got $2000 into it now.
