Default stock BBC and block strength...

i searched, i tried www.fasteststreetcar.com and www.nsca-racing.com and was trying to find some info on stock BBC blocks and cranks. Looking to see about how much power they can handle and what can i take advantage of to help strengthen them? are there specific years stronger than others?

What is the typical set-up is a 2-bolt block with splayed 4-bolt caps and a half-fill of cement...this is of course for an ALL OUT motor, not a street car...like FastRedChevy said, what are you trying to do?

I don't have ANYTHING. But you hear the same stories with those type engines as you do with LS1's. One person can make it last to XX amount, and the other can make it last to YY amount.

I started asking so before I started buying pieces, I could know a general range. I'm looking at doing a forced induction, blow through setup on a BBC. Turbocharged setup been researching over on turbomustangs.com in their carb section.

so how about 750 hp & 6500rpm

thats all you're after?

that can be has fairly easily w/ a sbc w/ spray, or better yet, if your dead set on a turbo, stay sbc.

a combo running a BBC and a turbo would be expected to at least run in the 8's, if not faster. runnng in the 10's or high 9's is cool, but not if you have 6 second parts in there.

BTW, depending on the block and crank, i've seen guys go in the 8's w/ a half filled block thats well machined, and i wouldnt try to push a stock crank that far myself. just my .02

see, it could be done with the LS1 too. those numbers...

and what is expected out of it, i frankly don't care what others think i'd be doing it for the fun factor and if it runs a number, great. i know i cold make it do 1000hp or something, but i'd like to just keep my sights set low. for the "in the mean time" type things so i can have fun and when the "real" stuff is set to drop in, i haven't waisted a season sitting there with the car waiting on JUST the engine. just a decent stock block/crank forged rod/piston mild head/cam and just have fun.

but thanks guys!

I disagree with the thought of just go with a small block and spray, yes it will achieve the goals, but the big block not having to work as hard to do it will last longer and not have to try as hard.

Honestly man, I have seen a 950hp turbo big block using factory 4-bolt block (Studded of course) with no fill....also not bored at all (Thicker walls) granted that will NEVER be the norm and you would be on borrowed time, but a splayed cap two/four bolt conversion with a half fill will be extremely reliable with a decent tune.

Good luck!

I have a friend with a 454 bored .030 over, a 4-bolt main block and no fill running a stock GM forged crank that is making just shy of 900 horse on the motor and spraying in with up to 550 horse nitrous at times with no problems for the last 3 years. Maybe we are lucky but no problems here.

According to Steve Morris anything over 1000hp they go to a Dart Big M or other aftermarket block on a blow thru FI application. I'm at 850 or so N/A with a stock GM block.
