Default 305ci cam choice

I picked up a 84 chevy k10 4x4 with a 305. I want to get some more power out of the current motor and was thinking about swaping in a nice 4x4 cam for more tq and some more RPM's. any suggestions

no offence, but its not worth it. if anything you wont even gain any power. get yourself a 350.

theres is nothing wrong with a 305, you can get parts cheap everywhere b/c of peoples mentallity that a 305 wont make good power. thats a joke seriously.
also its gonna depend on how much $$$ you have and what power level you are looking at getting from it.
if it was me and it was just used for puttin @ in mud id get a edelbrock performer manifold and mabey like a 268 comp cam, and get some headers and exhaust work, do those 3 things and tell me a 305 wont make good power. yea do the same things in a 350 and youd see better results, but after you but a 350 long block you could have bought any one of the above mentioned + some.
also do some good plugs wires dizzy cap n rotor button never hurts

truck has headers, dual 2.25" exaust and a edelbrock carb. Its a work horse. I am putting a plow. Plus take it through the mud every now and again. I also have a edelbrock performer intake to go on.

I am thinking about a Comp Cams part number 12-239-3 xtreme 4x4 cam
218/226 duration .462/.480 lift

If the bottom end lets go I can always get a 350 and swap the go fast parts

For a truck application i think your looking at the right cam. I was running a 305 in my 88 Monte SS with a comp 268 and it was a dog at the bottom end but pulled like a mother after about 3grand, would definetly not recomend it for a truck where you want more torque.

ok looks like thats the cam I'll go with. I like the fact it has a 1300-5600 power band.

thats retarted, b/c its 45CI smaller you wont gain power... ignorance.. my cousin had an 83 camaro z28 with a 305, mid length headers, dual exhaust, 5-speed, magnum roller rockers, and a 214/218 cam with 460/484 lift with a performer intake manifold and a 600 cfm carb (which was even a litttle too big), and that car boogied.

I agree, its like telling all the mustang guys to ditch the 302 and get a 351 because the 302 is a boat anchor

HaHaHa, I love 305 haters!!!!

We had a '80 'Bu Wgn, 305, 305 Z28 heads, street port, a .456 cam, single plane, 750 H, 3000 conv., 3.73 gear and went 14.40s!! Car was 3780 w/me in it.

305s are good motors, but they were handicapped from the factory, mostly due to the era they were built in.

Honestly, in my opinion, the only downside to a 305 is the bore size limiting valve size....it isn't THAT much smaller then the beloved LS-1

Yep, you can't put large valves in one, but then there intended use really should be matched to their abilities.

i totally agree, not to be a sour puss or anything but fixing up 305's are a complete waste of money ....i speak from experience i had one out of a 89 camaro in my 72 camaro and man did it suck ***....it was so sluggish...i had put an intake and a carb with headers and a msd distributor with an accel supercoil and some flows and that crappy thing only ran 16 in my freaking car ...and another friend of mine put some heads and a cam in his 305 and it never ran either...save your money and invest in a 350 and make it a 383 or 388 stroker

my buddy matt and i built a 305 for his 84 monte stock bottom end, with GM heads 2.02 valves, bigger springs, Comp292 Cam .501 lift, a air gap intake and headers, 600cfm carb and 4.10 gear and it goes mid-high 13s

how did you get 2.02 valves in a 305?

you would have to atleast bore it .30 over from my understanding

wow.... that sucks for you

its weird....

i got an 89 firebird

305

B&M shift kit for the auto transmission
Magnaflow exhuast
shorty headers (just got the car havnt gone through it throughly but its an edelbrock brand)
Accel ignition system
K&N filtercharged

the engine and tranny has so much torque my rear end got fucked up and hums like a bitch(or its the shift kit)

the car runs like a raped date...... runs 13s

and my mom wont ride in it b/c the shift kit gives you one bad *** jerk going to 2nd.... when im on it HARD my wheels break free and sometimes my front end jumps up momentarily

prolly your gear ratio.....

what about those who arent going to be bringing their ride to the track? say it's in a swb fullsize truck... more or less just a daily driver with a bit more kick? would it be worth it to wake the little 305 up? how much hp could you possibly get out of it with the right setup? that amount of hp might just be someone's hp goal/budget.

I put a perfect circle 292 cam in an otherwise stock 305 with a 4 spd, and it ran really good. Never took it to the track, but on the street it was alot of fun....

I can forsee a 305 running like a soggy diaper with a 292 cam. I'm on the get a 350ci train. I fully understand that you can make 305s to perform good. It boils down to ci with both. Would you like a handfull or 2 handfulls for your value sir. Slap some the right heads and cam and they rip though. No need for for big" valves on them either.
