cam and converter gurus, help a ls1 brother with sbc ?'s
ok, i am a very literate person in the ls1 worlds but when it comes to sbc stuff im limited when it gets really technical so help me out here. i have a s-10 with a 355ci sbc, flat tops, dart iron heads and 9.5:1 compression approx. its been a project ive been messing with for some time but im just getting back to finishing it up. had a ford 9" built for it, it has 3.73's in it, has a th350 tranny with the b&m ratchet stuff, stock stall converter and not much cam.
i want an agressive but reasonably drivable street toy, somthing along the lines of a 3200-3600 converter i guess and a cam that would sound and perform similar to the ls1 cams that are in the range of 224/230 under .600 lift, maby in the 110-112lsa range. what size/duration/lift cam would i need for a sbc, they rate stuff diff than the ls1 stuff so im lil out of the loop on pickin what i want here. also, who makes a good street/strip conveter thats not a elcheapo pos but will hold up good on the street. i wont be the one drivin the truck for the most part but i need to get some reliable parts in it. those b&m $99 converters just dont really catch my attention,
thanks guys

I've had great luck with J.W. convertors in my Nova. They make a 2800-3000 stall 10-1/2" that works great, but for a good street/strip convertor that allows a cam to work, go with the 3400 stall or 3800 stall 10". I ran a 3400 stall for 4 years, and had a 1.575 best 60 foot with my combo. The 3800 picked it up a few hundredths.
I'm currently using a small Crane Cam Saturday night solid grind. 518/536 lift 240/248 duration I believe. It's in the book, and it worked great on my 355 9.5:1 SBC. Shift at 6600 rpm, nice idle. Bummer is not a lot of vacuum b/c it's designed as more of a track-style cam.

Well, we had an '81 Bu, stock bottom end 355, Trick Flow twisted wedge G1 heads, a Comp magnum 280 cam w/501 lift, 750, Victor Jr, roller tip rockers, nothing exotic in other words, a T350, 3:73 gear, and ran 12.80s, drove all over Columbus almost every day.
Ahhhh, those days were so much simpler........
I think it was even less than 9 to 1, it had dished pistons in it., but maybe 9.5 with the heads. Went a 12.07 spraying a 150 shot right before the 1-2 shift.
Oh, I was only running a Saturday Nite 'Vert from TCI. It would only footbrake to like 1800 I think. LOL!!!

Take a look at the lunati voodoo cams as well as comp's extreme energy line. I am going to run a 230/236 .487/.490 110 LSA XE274 comp cam in my 9.75:1 350. I have seen several builds with this setup, one in carcraft and the motor peaked out with 440 hp and 450 ft lbs. Held 425+ ft lbs from 3400 on up to the red line. So if you got a 3500 stall, it would flash right in the main powerband of this cam. This was with vortec heads and a set of 1.6 lt4 roller rockers.
