Default Tq monster: what would you build?

ok I have a 84 chevy K10 with a weak 305. its a work truck so I am not worried about HP but I want a tq monster. what would you build? prefferably a small block on a 5k budget

I am thinking:
383 w roughly 10-1 compression
aluminum heads
comp cams extreme 4x4 218/226 .462/.480
edelbrock performer intake
speed demon carb

truck has headers and dual exaust

383 + small port heads and you'll have a tq monster.

Vortecs would be good, but if you want aluminum heads for some good compression L98 Corvette heads.

There are a couple of decent sources for flow #s AND intake port sizes. Looks like for iron heads, the 882 castings would also work, I imagine used ones would be extremely cheap.

Vortecs are a fine choice, but they are'nt aluminum. I would'nt be concerned about the material anyway, since the motor will be going into a work truck.

i've seen a 406 in a mag built with vortecs and the lunati .480/.480 make 500 ft/lbs tq.performer rpm air gap intake i think.

I'm assumeing the heads used in the article were ported? Stock vortecs perform better with a dual pattern. They like a little more duration on the exaust side due to its weaker flow in relation to the intake. That cam juiced picked out would compliment them nicely.

i can't remenber exactly but i'm pretty sure they were stock.i know the comp cam extreme energy .477/.480 cam is a good choice, but the 5oo ft/lbs is the most i've seen so far.personally i'd go with the extreme energy cam myself.

Yep, the Vortecs are def. weak on the exhaust side.

I would be sure to run enough cam to fill the cylinders, but keep the duration in check, and I wouldn't run a regular performer intake, at least go with a higher level dual plane.

I always liked the Weiand Stealth for mild motors.

Are you only wanting to use a SBC? If not I would recommend a 472/500 Caddy motor. I have a buddy that has found many for about 300.00-500.00 running and they will make a ton of torque very low in the RPM range. Just a thought.

Why don't you use the Edelbrock E-tec 170's as they are aluminum and flow better than L31 Vortecs plus have good springs and screw in studs and are under a grand. I would go with the 650 Demon if you are used to Holley carbs,I have a 750 and like it.You might want to try one of the Edelbrock carbs.

If I was gonna do it I would like to build a stroked 400ci ie 415 or 427ci

But you are talking BIG money. You could do something similar to what I'm building 383ci Eagle bottom end (all forged) and some E-tecs I went with the 200's trying to kill the tourque a lil (there is no weight in the back of a '65 C10) and the Holley Stealth Ram with a Comp XFI292. I was talking to my macineist who actually is a race shop (build all kinds of race cars and motors) he figures it'll be over 500/500 all day we'll dyno it early next year and see

I have a fuel injected 502 BBC that would go nice in the K10. It put down 619ft/lbs of torque on a chasis dyno.
