Default Retro-fit roller cam: worth the $$$??

I am thinking of doing a cam swap on my small block and didnt want to have to change stall converters. I figured I could put in a roller cam and still use my 2500 stall. My valvesprings will hold .550 lift. The cam i was looking at was a lunati with .530/.530 lift and 230/238 duration with a 112 lsa. What kind of horsepower gains will i see going from a .487/.490 lift 230/236 duration 110 lsa flat tappet cam (XE 274) to the roller cam listed above. This will be used with my afr 195 aluminum heads. Also will changing to a single plane benefit the cam change at all?

I dont know about switching to single plane helping you I dont think it would hurt but I can definatly say that you will pick up power from the cam change I know this is probably alot of comp propaganda but the illustrations are viable

http://www.compcams.com/information/Products/Camshafts/

look at the difference in the lobe profiles a roller will always ramp up faster than a flat tappet and will sit at higher lift longer giving much more flow potential

I say go for it

Definitely go for the roller if you've got the money. Be warned that if you switch from your RPM to a single plane intake you'll gain some impressive topend hp, but at the sacrifice of considerable torque below 3500rpm.

I run a retro-fit solid roller setup in my 406 and can say you will see a major power diffrence. That profile would be very good for your current setup. I would stick with the dual plane for now with that low of a stall. Also from you saying your springs are good to .550 lift makes me think they are the Z28 springs...if so you will need better springs. Invest in a good set of springs designed for a roller setup if nothing else just for the peace of mind.

Do not skimp on springs, listen to ^^^^^^, it's much cheaper & smarter to do it right the 1st time and not cause major damage.

I was ordering a cam long time ago, and the tech guy told me the exact same profile with a roller & solid is worth 50 HP on a 800 HP BBC, because of the friction loss.

Good luck.
