Default Best BBC head

Whats your guys opinion on the best BBC head NOT INCLUDING the big chiefs and the other HIGH dollar heads for a smaller CUI BBC, 454+ range?
Thanks

Lot of variables, but IMHO, anything < 510cid you should use an oval port and it should have around a 300cc intake runner and flow in the mid to upper 300's. Edelbrock, Brodix Race Rites, not sure if Dart has one are good heads that can be ported. Anything larger you can run a small rectangle and port it. I'm going to run Pro Action 320cc heads ported on my 555. Dart Pro 1's are also a great option that will be my second choice if I have to wait any longer on stock to come in. Right now I've been waiting a couple months. Getting really impatient.

355'S ARE WAY TO BIG. anything around 454ci you would be best using an oval port. if you plan on spinning it to the moon then a rectangle port is great, but to build a reliable big block that can rev is expencive because of the weight it has to sling around.

.

454-477 I use something around 320. With int flow in the high 380-390 area.
+1 355 is way too much, unless of course your spinning 8500+
My last 477" had Brodix old stlye, flowed ~380. Made 800 HP with a .788 roller. Ran 9.30 and went thru the lights @ 7300. Could have pushed it harder with the cam it had, but why. Made 250 + pass' every year. Can't get more basic than that. I would not have any issue with any name brand head, they're all decent, I vote go with the best deal you can find. If it's possible, Jessel's are really nice if you can afford them, I frigging hate girdles. Spend the money wisely, and take your time, good luck.

The engine is a 468 BBC, two stage N20 car.

With an unported intake and out of the box aluminum bow tie heads it went 10.4@136 with a 1.8 short time spinning hard.
On the motor it went in the 11's spinning. Not sure on what its jetted to, going to find out.

I figure the heads and intake are REALLY choking it out. It also has a belt driven water pump, cowl hoof with a chrome air cleaner lid, not the K$N extreme thing.

Anyone know about the aluminum BBC bow tie heads from back in the 80's? SPDC does not LOL.

In no hurry, Jessel all the way.

I actually had a set of the chevy alum heads, my 1st alum head. The problem was I was breaking them every year. Couldn't afford Jessel, and kept pulling out the threads when we put a roller in. Car ran 10.20 @ 3400 lbs. Mine were used and had a lot of runs & street miles. Good heads for the use they were made for. If possible at least clean them up a little and gasket match. Have fun, good luck.

Well there is two GOOD local head porters, one does pro stock stuff.

I have thought about giving one of them the heads and intake.

So far from what we've seen the RHS 320cc heads are the best when ported. The 355 Darts are pretty good as well. But our last motor was a 468, eagle rotating assembly, 12.9:1 CR, the heads averaged 387@.800 lift with a 2.25 valve on a 4.31 bore. Single dominator with a Victor 454R intake and it made 856hp@7700 and 644tq@6100. The engine ran a 8.69@156 in a 2350lb Top Sportsman Monza in 4500' DA air. We've got our new motor almost done, its the same heads with 2.32" intake valves instead on a 565, two carbs, dry sump, etc and we're looking for 2hp per cubic inch.

The aluminum bowtie's can run really good but like they're saying, they're "may pop's", atleast thats what we call them.

AFR has some really good standard style BBC heads in a variety of port sizes. Tony does a good job on design and I know for a fact that AFR heads flow as advertised.

Like most people said the 355's are a bad choice for a 454-468 type motor, unless your going to spin it to the moon or spray a **** load of nitrous, on the motor it will not work very well. Dart Pro1 310's would be a good choice, my 310's flowed 378cfm @ .700 after some porting. AFR makes some killer BBC heads.

I went 9.90's n/a with a tight converter, 8.80's with 250HP N20 @ 3300lbs with a .030 over 454, Dart 310's out of the box, Victor 454R, 1050 Dominator, 13.5 comp, stock LS6 forged crank, a small roller .714 lift 266 274 dur 108 ls. It was a killer little motor till one of my Howards steel billet rods broke in half after less than 250 passes (I only run Oliver steel rods now).

I would not spend alot of money on the old bowtie heads, the aluminum is pop can crap. David, put the damn thing together with the parts you have without spending a fortune and see how it runs, then go from there.

AFR heads rock! I've got a small block set and they are awesome. A friend of mine has CNC 335's on a 496ci and he was putting down some good numbers.

Dart 325's and 10:1 made 463/588 at the wheels w/ an NA 496. Full weight car went 11.1 on motor and 10.3 on a 150.
