The 305 has a 3.736" bore and a 3.48" stroke crank. The 283 has a smaller main journal diameter than the 305, with a 3.875" bore & uses a 3.00" stroke. A 307 block has a 3.875" bore with a 3.25" stroke crank and has the larger main journals like the 305 & 350's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrol...l-Block_engine

Even better, why not go with a 350? More cid, more parts availability, same outside dimensions, and more power? The 305 was one of the biggest pigs I've ever drive (no offense, just MHO).

the 305 was a bad motor and i got rid of it for an ls1, but there is still a place in my heart for that ol '305 sitting in the corner. I think I might do something with it one day.

I kind of like the idea of a well built 305. And I know it won't ever be as fast as larger displacement engines but people wouldn't believe a fast 305 existed and it'd be cool to be like yes it does.

I assure you I know how well built 350 + can be built but if I go that route I'd want to get a good solid block and that'd cost me more. I'll probably go with the built 305 for awhile then get a different block + heads. 305 is a lot cheaper cause you can use vortec heads for very effective results

I used to run 305's in a street stock (circle track car) because that was the rules. I felt gay calling summit and ordering 334 ci pistons for a stroker 305. I wouldn't ever think about putting a 334 in a street car, but for a race class thats's rule book states "you must run a 305 block w/ readable casting #'s", it made it a little bit easier for me to run up front. Ive got 3 complete 305 roller (87-92) motors at the house, and the only reason I keep them laying around, is for weigh outs, mock ups, clearance work for chassis, or for making a body a runner/daily driver. I wouldn't waste my $$ if I were you.
But thats just my .02.
And by the way, 350 pistons (forged or hyper.) are about half the price of 305 pistons. Cranks and rods are the same price...so...their more expensive.
