Default 72' Nova Smallblock Cam Ideas...

Hey guys I just got my 72' Nova this past week and she is a beauty. Our track doesn't open up until the 10th of January so I haven't ran her yet but she isn't too spicy...the guy I bought it off of drove it more than raced it and never put much of a motor into her.

In the next 8months or so I will be saving up to purchase a Dart Big Block, 565ci or so....AFR heads, solid roller cam, 14:1 CR, etc....etc....but for NOW...I just want to throw as big of a cam as I can in this little smalllblock and see what i can get out of her.

So...I am looking at buying a complete valvetrain and hydraulic roller camshaft. The motor as it sits is a smallblock 350 bored .030 over....stock casting heads with mild porting, edelbrock performer intake mani with 2" spacer, and a 750 Holley carb, stock springs, rockers, p-rods, and a hotcam. I want to buy new lifters, springs, p-rods, and accompanying seals and retainers along with as nasty a cam as I can get to pull as much power out of this smallblock as possible with the stock heads.

As for drivetrain shes got a TH-350 trans with a 3200 stall, moser 12-bolt, 33-spline axles, and 5.13 gears....which will be changed out at the same time as the cam for a 1/4 mile set-up. (presently set up for 1/8mile)

So help me out with some cam ideas....shelf cams, customs, whatever, direct me in the right place please! And Thanks!

There isn't much you can go with stock heads without the valves hitting.I would go with a big NOS kit if your not worried about the motor. That is a great looking car you have iv'e always liked the 68-72 nova's.

Use this cam-12-423-8 comp cams, its a hydraulic roller, works good on stock 350's,you will need to change valvesprings if they are stock.Get rid of that intake too.Put on a professional products crosswind and put some 4.10 gears and its should run just fine.

The performer basically is a stock replacement intake. The car should run high 12's low 13's in the 1/4

i read 12-423-8, looks like a pretty nice little cam..224/230 .502/.510 110LSA but when i calculated the overlap it was only 3.5*, that wontbe very choppy, unless i did it wrong.
So for this cam id need lifters, springs, and p-rods?

How about your thoughts on spraying this motor, you think i could get a plate kit and shoot 100 to her?

Sick car man, i think you could easily get away with 100 if not a little more If you arent worried about the motor then spraying it will pry be best $$ wise since you're going to need some for a 565. Nonetheless, at only 3000 LBS with a bored 350 and 3200 stall that thing will move.

That's correct,it doesnt have much overlap, and thats exactly what you need to keep cylinder pressure up.Too many people overcam to get a good sound, but at the same time they are sacrificing power. That cam sounds pretty good in a 350.If you have a flat tappet cam at this time, you will need cam, lifters, springs and pushrods to do the install correctly. You will be very happy if you use that cam.

presently there is a hydraulic roller in it.....so id prolly get away with just springs and p=rods, correct? how about the LT1 heads???? If I got a set of those used from a member and got them mildly ported would that free up alot of PTV clearance? Could I bump the compression in the 11's and run 110 octane? Keep in mind it is a trailer queen/track car only.

The late model LT-1 heads are a differant animal. Here are a nice set of cast iron heads that would be fairly inexpensive in a 200cc intake runner http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DART-...sid=p1638.m118 .

You probably only need to change the cam,was it an original roller motor or did someone convert it?The late model lt1 heads will not work on a standard sbc.
