Man, you arent asking for mutch, a set of BS 350 heads with 64 cc chambers and a small cam will get you that if you have 9 to 1 compression. 1 hp per cube is too easy.

i was lookin to get at least 350, i wasnt sure i should build it much bigger than that cuz i didnt wanna give it more then it could handle...people told me that since its not the four bolt main and i was originally gunna boost it that i prolly shouldnt, but im just lookin for a street/strip car nd id love to have 400+ hp if i could for a reasonable price without boost...if u have a better set up im open to ne suggestions you guys got for me...Thanks

Well, the 383 is optimal for a budget. I have 1000$ in my 383 in my 89, i kill LS1s with bolt ons and pulls HARD even with a junk 2.73 gear. You canget a set of vortec heads and a 383 stroker kit and make 425+ hp and 450+ ftlbs tq. Enough to make anyone smile. A 2 bolt main is good for 500 hp with no problem as long as you stud the mains.

i wanted to get the 383 kit but i decided not to because of the gearing in the car i was originally gunna use, so i got a rebuild kit nd need a cam, heads, intake, carb and all that. but now im getting a trans am nd im just looking to build a motor thats gunna get me at least 350 to the wheel...i want a cam that will give me a little rough idle and give me some good torque nd horse power...im lookin to make most of my horse power before 5500 rpm..any suggestions??

Wow....what does the gearing have to do with it?

Well, vortec heads are cheap and make plenty of torque and power. Use them.

well, the thing is man, a 383 with vortec heads and a minor cam will make 400 ftlbs....at 3500 rpm or so, the crusing speed can be kept low and run great. I have a 383 in my car with a 2.73 gear, i cruise at 1100 rpm at 50 or so, damn near idling. Not what i want but it does its thing for now.

My setup is a 355 4 bolt main with forged srp pistons. 10.5:1 compression, Ported aluminum heads. Cam was 230 236 @ 0.50 but swapped it out now for a 240 246 because the heads flowed enough air for it. Got a edelbrock victor jr. intake with a holley hp series 750 carb. Havent got it dynoed with the new cam yet but i will but should be pushing a bit over 350 rwhp. and it runs really good even with my stock 2.77's. It will feel alot better once i put my gears in it. Basically a build for nitrous though. Thats what i wanted and im planning on running a 150 shot.

You and me need to run, i have a-mean-89-RS with 2.73 gears LOL! Mine pulls HARD for the gear that is in it, i bet i would pull you down low since i technically should make more low end power, would be fun.

Check out the article "Wake -Up 'stick" on chevy high performance. Their 383 had the XE268H using Dart 200cc heads on a 69' Nova put down 353rwhp @ 5,800 and 375 lb-ft of torque @3900 granted this is on a 383 with some big heads but the article might give you an Idea of what to expect.

Or do a search for articles on an engine build called danger mouse...that one helped me quite a bit....
