After purchasing my Hendrick LT4 . . I wanted to compile some of the data I received and here is what I compiled:

History of the 1997 30th Anniversary Camaro

1997 marked the 30th year of production of the Camaro, and Chevrolet wanted to commemorate this prestigious anniversary with a unique appearance package for the Camaro. The color pallet for the anniversary package was taken from the 1969 Camaro SS that Paced the Indianapolis 500 race of that year. An unmistakable color combo of white with hugger orange stripes and a white leather interior with houndstooth seat inserts. The interior was further embellished with 30th Anniversary logos embroidered into the front seat head rests, in the center of the rear seat back and on the front floor mats. Chevrolet offered this appearance package on the Camaro Z28 and the Camaro SS.

30th Anniversary Camaro SS

For the 1997 model year there were only 957 30th Anniversary Camaro SS’s built. Chevrolet designated the RPO code of Z4C to the 30th Anniversary Appearance Package. The 30th Anniversary Camaro SS also required the following RPO codes from Chevrolet; 1SJ (Z28 Preferred Equipment Group #2), WU9 and AG1 (6-way Power Driver's Seat) options for coupe and t-top models, and required 1SM, WU9 and AG1 for the convertibles.

The Introduction to the 1997 30th Anniversary Camaro LT4 SS

To further celebrate Camaro’s 30th Anniversary, SLP offered to its top dealerships an invitation to order what would become one of the most unique fourth generation Camaro’s ever built: A special content Camaro SS with a 330 horsepower, LT4 Grand Sport Corvette Engine.

Only 106 special 1997 Camaro SS 30th Anniversary LT4’s would be built. 100 would be for sale in the United States and 6 would be sold throughout Canada. Due to timing constraints for certification, the cars were not available for sale in California, New York or Massachusetts.

To purchase one of these special Camaro SS’s one needed to complete a SLP Sales Agreement Form and place a $5,000 deposit with their dealer. Once the deposit was received by SLP, the owner is notified of a production date. The first 50 cars were built between January and February 1997 and the second group of 50 cars was produced between March and April. Production date on HMS #5 was 3/26/1997

The Camaro 30th Anniversary LT4 SS required the following options from Chevrolet:

• Hard Top
• 1SJ - Z28 Preferred Equipment Group #2

• AG1 - 6-way Power Driver's Seat

The LT4 SS included all of the base Camaro SS options listed previously and added the following:

SLP could have installed the impressive LT4 crate engines directly into the Camaro SS as is, but they took it a step further. All 106 of the production LT4 engines were completely disassembled, balanced, blueprinted and honed with stress plates. Areas of the engine that were checked and adjusted included, the deck, line bore, bearing clearances, head surfaces and a multi angle valve job.

One in 5 engines was selected to be tested on a Superflow engine dynamometer, and if your engine was chosen, the performance sheets were included with the paperwork inside the car. My LT4 Camaro’s engine was chosen for a bench test and the dyno sheet indicated a maximum of 333 horsepower and 344 lb/ft of torque.

Every LT4 Camaro was tested on a chassis dynamometer in addition to performing a short six mile road test, the dyno results were also included with the car and a letter was sent to each purchaser to let them know this testing would be performed on their Camaro. The provided sheets with my LT4 Camaro showed an achieved 281 rear wheel horsepower and 311 lb/ft of torque.

The Introduction to the Hendrick Motorsports Special Edition Camaro LT4 SS

While SLP Engineering performed the LT4 SS upfits they worked with Hendrick Motorsports to take handfull of the 100 LT4 SS designated for sale in the United States and make them just that more unique.

Hendrick placed an advertisement for their special Camaro in the April 1997 Hemmings Motor News publication.

• There are a total of nine Hendrick Motorsports Special Edition Camaro LT4 SS's.
• The 1997 30th Anniversary Camaro LT4 SS's are SLP car #'s 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 16, 23, 43 and 71 of the 100.
• The #1 LT4 SS was Rick Hendrick's personal car (I believe this car is now in possession of Jim Perkins, former GM General Manager, and the current COO of the Hendrick Companys).
• MSRP was $47,250 - I believe they all sold for over $50,000.
• Changes to the car are mostly appearance
• Embroidered Hendrick LT4 Floor Mats
• Hendrick LT4 Dash Plaque
• Hendrick Key Fob
• Hendrick LT4 & SS Car Cover
• Hendrick LT4 Special Edition Sail Panel Badges
• Performance Exhaust System with Twin Dual Polished Tips
• Level III Sport Suspension
• Came with a short video of them being built at SLP
• Each car was provided with a signed Certificate of Autheniticty

The Hendrick Autogroup owns eight Chevrolet dealerships so each dealership sold one of the HMS Camaros to the public. The dealerships are: City Chevrolet, Rick Hendrick Chevrolet (Durham, NC), Hendrick Automall, Performance Chevrolet, Colonial Chevrolet, Superior Chevrolet, Rick Hendrick Chevrolet (Charleston, SC) and Quality Automotive. My LT4 SS was originally sold from Performance Chevrolet.

HMS # 1 (LT4 SS # 1) Sold From: City Chevrolet Charlotte, NC
HMS # 2 (LT4 SS # 3) Sold From: City Chevrolet Charlotte, NC
HMS # 3 (LT4 SS # 4) Sold From: Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Durham, NC
HMS # 4 (LT4 SS # 5) Sold From: Hendrick Automall Cary, NC
HMS # 5 (LT4 SS # 6) Sold From: Performance Chevrolet Chapel Hill, NC
HMS # 6 (LT4 SS # 16) Sold From: Colonial Chevrolet Virgina Beach, VA
HMS # 7 (LT4 SS # 23) Sold From: Superior Chevrolet Merriam, KS
HMS # 8 (LT4 SS # 43) Sold From: Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Charleston, SC
HMS # 9 (LT4 SS # 71) Sold From: Quality Chevrolet Olathe, KS

Included with the purchase price of the car were travel arrangements and accommodations to pick up the car. The delivery of the nine HMS Camaro SS was to occur at the Charlotte National Speedway but unfortunately it was booked, so the gala affair was held on June 25, 1997 at Hendrick Motorsports Headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. The vehicles were arranged around the checkered flag “Winners Circle” center plaza and covered for unveiling by their new owners. Adjacent to the cars were Quaker State Duffle bags and a case of SynQuest Synthetic Motor Oil.

People on hand at the delivery:

• Rick Hendrick
• Jim Perkins; CEO Hendrick Motorsports and former Chevrolet General Manager
• Terry Labonte; #5
• Ray Evernham; Crew Chief
• Chuck Mac; HMS Designer
• Reg Harris; SLP Engineering
• Matt Murphy; SLP Engineering

The new car owners had photo opportunities with the people on hand and had lunch with Rick Hendrick and Terry Labonte.

Jeff Gordon; #24 and Ricky Craven; #25 unfortunately were not available on the actual day of delivery but they did arrive the following day. A few of the car owners had already left with their new cars, so only the new owners that had stayed around for the next day were able to meet them and have their cars signed, if so desired.

Other Info:

• Cars # 7 (SLP SS # 23) and # 9 (SLP SS # 71) are the only two Hendrick Motorsport Camaro SS’s have the optional all white leather, the other seven have the standard white leather with houndstooth inserts.
• The Hendricks crew did not like the exhaust, it was too quiet, but it could not be changed in time for delivery.
• The dual twin tip performance exhaust is interesting, it has extra resonators AFTER the muffler just before of the tail pipes.
• The cars were delivered with a case of Quaker State SynQuest Oil & other QS, stuff - which I currently do not have.
• HMS #4, #5 and #6 were sold to mutual friends from Utah, two have been resold, the other is still owned by the original purchaser.
• Car # 9 (SLP SS # 71) the owner had the outside of the hood signed and clear coated.
• I have made contact with only one other HMS owner #4 of 9.
• At time of the delivery the Hendrick LT4 SS car covers, dash plaque and exterior sail panel badging were not available, and were shipped to the owners at a later date. Cars were delivered with the standard Hendrick SS car cover, dash plaque and sail panel badges.

Breakdown of known RPO code options on the HMS Camaro LT4 SS’s:

HMS # 1 (LT4 SS # 1) Options: 10C,
HMS # 2 (LT4 SS # 3) Options: 10C, R1*
HMS # 3 (LT4 SS # 4) Options: 10C,
HMS # 4 (LT4 SS # 5) Options: 10C, UN0, C49, U1S

HMS # 8 (LT4 SS # 43) Options: 10C, R1*
HMS # 9 (LT4 SS # 71) Options: 10I

* SLP Additional Content of the R1 wheel and tire package
** The R1 package is indicated on the second sticker, although documented by HMS to be in error.

I own Hendrick Car #5, SLP LT4 SS #6. I cannot take the credit for this information. It has been compiled from information gathered from the documentation included with my LT4 SS, from the former LT4.com, other sources from the internet, friends, former and fellow LT4 SS owners.

R7A and R7T were codes for SLP "stuff" . . . but what exactly I am not sure.
I don't have time at the moment to go through things, but from what I could tell yesterday, if you want to get technical, you can't say WU9 is like WU8.

WU8 for the '98-02 SSes was like R7T, it's what all the SSes were supposed to have.

WU9 on the other hand was something only some of the 30th Anniversary Edition white and orange SSes had.

R7A isn't involved with SLP I don't think. I'd have to check tomorrow. I'll look into it; I don't remember what R7A is off the top of my head and I don't want to stick my foot in my mouth.

Your other posts I'll have to read tomorrow!

Okay, had a bit of time before a client meeting on the phone.

R7A definitely doesn't relate specifically to SS, because it was used years before the SS was even available. I checked it for '94 and over a 100,000 Camaros had R7A. In 1997, 44,915 of the 49,515 coupes had it, so it doesn't seem SLP related at all. Even 29,956 of those coupes were V6 coupes and they had R7A.

R7A literally means CONTROL SALES ITEM NO. 26

I have never found a guide to what these control sales item type codes mean. Deciphering them through a process of elimination is just about the only way (other than finding something old that says what they literally mean) and it takes forever, and sucks to do.

For the 1997 model year there were only 957 30th Anniversary Camaro SS’s built.
I'm going to attempt to figure out if that number is the number I calculated (1,066), just without the Canadian cars included.

coupe:
Z4C, Z49 and WU9 without R7T = 45 (of the 143)
Z4C, Z49 and R7T = 0

convertible:
Z4C, Z49 and WU9 without R7T = 24 (that's right, every single one of these was for Canada (check previous post's number)!)
Z4C, Z49 and R7T = 0

Total:
Z4C, Z49 and WU9 without R7T = 69
Z4C, Z49 and R7T = 0

Well, didn't quite get down to that number. According to my calculations, 997 were American (or not Canadian at least) and 69 were Canadian. I don't have the export RPO codes written down at the moment, so I can't check those to see if any were, for example, sent to Japan or Europe. I don't know where the number you have came from, but it seems too low. It might be one of those numbers based on percentage like I mentioned earlier.

305 horsepower LT1 V8 Engine ( 310 horsepower with Optional Exhaust )
Is this really accurate? The '96s were reported to have 300 hp with the Z28 exhaust, 305 with the Two On The Left exhaust. Was TOTL standard in '97 and they are referring to Dual-Dual as the optional one making 310 hp?

Do you have any documentation listing the SLP part numbers for the LT4 or LT1 SSes? I'd love a scan of it if you have anything. I have a very incomplete list.

Do you have the video of the LT4 SSes being built? Can you take a video using your digital camera on a tripod of the TV playing it?

Are you the original owner, or second owner of your car?

Do you happen to have a picture of the R1 tires option on anybody's car or unmounted? How were these wheels and tires delivered? Surely they weren't shoved into the interior of the car were they? I've seen people do that. Only 1 fits in the trunk, two in the backseat barely, and 1 in the front passenger seat.

What I was trying to say is ALL 30th Anniversary SS Z4C Cars had to have the WU9 to become a SS . . . at least that's what Dave told me one time . .

And that the WU9 "forces" the R7T whether it shows up on the list or not . . .

I am the 3rd owner of my car . . . never been titled still on MSO.

I do have the VHS video, and I have a novel of data that came with the car . . which is where a fair amount of the above listed info came from.

I do not recall where I got the power numbers.

I do know the Dual Dual Exhaust was an option in 1997.

As for the R1's I have no clue how they came . . . sure wish mine had them . . . but I assume Hendrick kept them, even though they are listed on my SLP extra content tag . . I do have a letter from Performance Chevy saying they were not included, and listed in error.

My LT-4 Has the code WU9 , Z4C , and R8T. The build number is 2436 that would suggest the 2nd build of the LT-4 cars. How to tell proof positive?? There are a lot of different "small" things to look for. For a while I was concerned that there would be "cloned" vehicle's out there but there is almost no way to copy every last detail on a Original car.
The best advice is to check on message boards like this one and you will be able to find out quickly if you have found a true LT-4 car.
I purchased my car from Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet and they thought that would be able to get more of them. But we know how that worked out.

UN0 - In Dash CD
U1S - 12 Disc Changer
R1 - BFG R1 Wheel and Tire package?

Looks like he sold one . . . May I ask are you the original owner?

If I ever find the time I guess I'll have to make a new LT4 registry on my site. Doesn't look like anybody else has interest in making one. Might as well do it.

Xsta, I just noticed this thread and I am surprised you own one of the 9 Hendricks cars. I also read that you only made contact with 1 owner of the other cars. I will find out more info but a family member of mine I believe he is the owner of #9. He talked about his hood being worth a lot and it would make sense if it was signed. He resides in orland so is very local to you considering there are only 9 made which is why it's surprising. Like I said, I will chime in more when I find out info and will also try to get pictures to share. He said he received a video with his car where a nascar driver took it around the track before it got put in the trailer. If you know names, I will PM you.

It is the one car where the outside of the hood was signed.

Tim and I still have LT4 SS #69. Tim actually drove it this past weekend. Been replacing hoses that the rats decided to chew on. Still doesn't even have plates. It now has around 80 miles on her

There is an LT4 for sale on autotrader. It has 30k miles on it and they are asking 24900. Looks clean and supposedly has documentation. Just fyi. Unfortunately i already bought a 5th gen and would lose too much to make the trade.
