Default R1 Projectors, are they worth trying to retrofit?

So a few days ago a buddy of mine high sided his 2007 R1. Bike isnt totaled, but he does have to buy new headlights for it. so i have course told him i wanted his old ones, since the projectors themselves arent damaged. My questions are: what size are they, does anyone know if the cutoff is decent enough for HIDs, and is it worth trying to retrofit them to a camaro headlight housing. I was even thinking about buying some ebay projectors, and swapping them out.

I have been searching a few R1 forums, as well as this one all morning, and really havent found any answers. I know a lot of guys with R1s put HIDs in the projectors, but that doesnt mean its performs well. Any and all help would be awesome!

How many projectors does the R1 have? Is it one low and one high? Or two bi-xenon? If its one low and one high, you can't use them unless you get another matching pair (otherwise you could only retrofit one headlight). If its two bi-xenon, I'd like to see the output.

If you decide to get the ebay projector headlights for the Camaro intending to swap out the projectors, the TSX projector might fit and it is one of the best low beam projectors you can get. And its one of the easiest to install. There are 1 or 2 better, but they cost much more and are harder to get and install. An alternative is the FX projector with is bi-xenon. Its also a great projector with a good low & high. There are 1 or 2 better bi-xenon projectors but they too are more expensive/harder to get/harder to install.

Thanks for the info on the TSX projectors, ill have to start looking around, see if i can pick some up cheap. The main reason i am asking about the R1 projectors is cuz im getting them for free, so i was trying to see what i could do with them, but i if cant use them, then oh well, ill use something else.

The R1 uses a projector for the low beam, and a normal H7 headlight bulb for the highbeam. It has two projectors total, one for each side for the low, and then the two H7s for the high. So its not Bi-xenon.

So it has two low-beam projectors and two H7 high-beam reflectors? Four bulbs in total? If that is correct, then you may be able to use the two low-beam projectors. I wonder what their output is like. What bulb does the low-beam projector use?

im an r1 owner (im on my 3rd r1) and known as jray02r1 on R1-forum.com If im not mistaken the projector lenses are screwed right to the headlight housing. So i dont really see being able to use the projectors from an r1, since there would be nothing really incaseing the bulb. unless you fabed something up, i think youd be better off if you just bought the projector headlights designed for your car. Oh and the HID kits for the r1 work extremely well

i see what ur saying. i havent actually taken the headlights apart yet, so i had no idea how they were put together. i guess if they are screwed on to the housing that may be a dead end. Ill have to wait until i have the headlight in my hand. Thanks for the info. My friend that highsided is on the forum as well i believe, ill have to ask him tomorrow what his name screen name is.

I'd like to see the output in stock form. Generally H7 projectors accept HID fairly well. You can get a H7 HID kit or an OEM D2S HID setup and use H7 to D2S adapters.

I'm still not convinced by that photo. A tear down will definitely answer the question though.

If you put together a thread with an overview or write-up or at least some pictures, I'll add it to the Lighting FAQ. Thanks.
