Do you have a spare key? Have you tried cleaning the key and the ignition cylinder?
The VATS bypass is pretty simple to install but you have to be sure you have the right combination of resistors. There are 15 different values of resistors used by GM (actually, only 14 were ever used in f-bodies). If the key you have isn't working then perhaps you're not getting a valid reading from it for use in your bypass. The dealer can cut you another key using the VIN to lookup the correct key blank.

There is no 5 ohm key pellet in GM VATS configurations. Here is a chart of the 15 different values used: http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#pass_key.
Also, changing the ignition cylinder has nothing to do with the resistance value. The cylinder only has a pair of contacts that connect the key pellet to the BCM. And the BCM can't be reprogrammed to use a different key value.

Jumping in this. I bought a 94 off some one who bypassed the ign sw. I want to go back to stock set-up. I ohmed out the key and bypassed system and it wasn't the vats. had an ign sw (lwr column) threw that in no change. Is there an electrical feature other the vats in the lock cylinder?? Could that be a problem??
thanks

I had a local locksmith install a brandnew lock cylinder in my SS because the wires were broke for the VATS. He installed it in my driveway and gave me two new keys for about $280.00

I used a resistor to bypass the key, but I still had issues with it randomly not letting me start the car. At one point my car wouldn't start for a week.
I had to bypass the bcm at the starter relay. Now sometimes my security light stays on for a few minutes after she starts, but she starts everytime.
