Default Autometer tach issues

Been having issues with my Autometer tach for a while now and it eventually stopped working all together. I got around today and started messing with the wiring to find I had a bad ground. It illuminates and I can see/hear that it's getting power. But I'm pretty sure before the needle use to sweep up to the shift point on power up and now it just moves maybe a 100 rpm. It's also not reading anything when the car is running. I wouldn't rule out that maybe my tach wire I have run from the PCM isn't getting a good signal but I'm curious if maybe some damage was done to the tach in the process of my ground working it's way loose. Would the needle not sweeping on start up be a sign of some type of internal damage?
