I have too many expenses at the moment to do a full out stereo in my car. I am interested in getting a headunit and some door speakers right now. I may get an amp in the future, but not right now. I was thinking about getting some type r components, will they get loud enough on a 50x4 headunit without an amp?

Also, any way to use the monsoon amp in the door for aftermarket speakers or not really/not worth it?

Don't use the Monsoon amp; it has a built in crossover that's made for the stock speakers. Use even a head unit before the Monsoon - but an aftermarket amp is best. (Note that lots of people do use the Monsoon amp with aftermarket speakers - they are all wrong. Lots of people hook up their cable boxes with the F-type coaxial connectors to huge 50" HDTVs - they're all idiots)

As for loud enough - I have no idea what you consider as such.

actually the monsoon amp isnt powerful but not bad. The HU will be much worse. That HU is realistically putting out 15x4, not nearly enough for a component setup. The built in crossovers may not be made for your new speakers, but at least they will have power.

And I have a 50" tv and I use hdmi for everything besides wii (and optical for my home theater). You're more of an idiot running component off the hu when you already have the monsoon amp. You will end up wanting an aftermarket amp, but for a little while theres nothing wrong with just speakers on monsoon. It'll will still be a great jump in quality.

The Monsoon might put out 25W. Power is not everything. I'd take a good crossover with 15W over a crap crossover with 500W.

^thats 15w split to tweeter and mid. with the monsoon thats 25 to the mid, and the 15 from the hu to the tweeter. the monsoon amp doesnt make much distortion, its the stock hu that does. and trying to turn it up running off the hu to components is sure as hell gonna distort like mad.

You're not even trying to address my main point. The crossover in the Monsoon system is designed for the stock speakers. (Well, actually, it's mainly just designed to be cheap). This is not a power issue.

Also, the woofer is drawing most of the power. A balanced system here with a 25W woofer would be more like 8W tweeter, and even them, it's not like you'd need 25+8=33W/channel if you had just one channel. Besides, the crossover is still passive.

Id say use the stock amp and crossovers. I would rather have a little bit more power and a descent crossover than a great crossover and little power. I am running 100W to my CDT 61CVs and it is just enough, I could only imagine how the db output would lack with only 15W RMS. And those are alpine components, not like they are some high end audiophile speakers. And who cares if the stock crossover was designed for the stock speakers, it would be pretty close to what an aftermarket crossover is, maybe not in quality, but the cutoff frequencies would be similar.
Also, it would take a lot less work to just use the factory wires too. Upgrade the wires when you get an aftermarket amp. Im running my front components off of a Kicker ZX200.4 amp that provides 121W RMS x 2 @ 4ohms and it was only $100 brand new on ebay with a warranty.

You can run the tweeter/mids off the aftermarket head unit, use the built in x-over and filter out the bass, then buy a small amp to power 2 6.5" sailpanel subs
You can do this with a lot of the kenwood head units, I don't know about other brands.
FYI,
I did this with my son's car, except the sub was a 12", And the results impressed me!

So will the alpine type r components or those cdt components be fine on an aftermarket headunit 50x4, 23x4 rms, or not? And if i got this route what would be the best option for speakers.

Since you're just running them off the head unit, I would look for more efficient speakers than the Alpines(87db), like the CDT CL-62 set(92.3), or Polk DB6501(92db).

^ to that, I have those polks and they are hooked up to the monsoon amp (tweeters to hu like factory) and they are definitely under powered. I cant imagine if they were less efficient like the alpines. I mean, as long as you dont like to crank it up, or drive with windows down or t tops off its ok but otherwise you really need an amp.

ive tried the type-r powered to the aftermarket HU i didnt like it at all.


u deffinatly need a AM amp.

u can try hooking the type-r to ur HU and if u dont like it u can add an amp later.

words I have finally learned to live by after working on cars for 10 years. "Save yourself the time and trouble and do it right the first time". Go on ebay and get a $100 dollar amp, you'll be much happier and you'll only have to do the work once.
