Default Stock Monsoon system in WS6 giving me the E20 for every CD

Hello guys,

I recently realised that my stock Monsoon Sound system in my 2001 Trans AM WS6 was not working right.

All of the sudden it was giving me an E20 everytime I put in a CD. I looked it up online and found out what the code meant, and it basically said the CD could be scratched or dirty so, i cleaned them and nothing different. This E20 pops up with EVERY CD I put in, so I tried once more with a fresh CD I just burned and still came out with E20. So I'm wanting to know what is causing this? I heard it could be humidity but its been like this for a week now.

Do I have to replace it? Radio works fine, its just the CD player.

Please help me, Thanks

Chase

Also is there anything that can clean out the inside of the CD player? Like a cleaning CD? Im not a audio genius whatsoever..

Mine does the same thing or did the same thing and I took it apart and cleaned it and noticed the lens was dirty as hell. Try that if you can it fixed my problem. Hope this helps.

Is it a simple job taking it apart? Or am I going to get into something I cant handle?

I don't remember to be honnest with you. Not sure that is actually the problem, but it was with mine. I found a site that told how to do this, but don't remember what it was I will look and give you the link if I find it. It wasn't to hard that I remember tho.

If you don't want to take it apart you can try one of those eye cleaning kits that come with the CD with the brushes on them and the cleaning spray.

Ok so I couldn't find a write up on taking it apart, but I found a couple places telling what the errors were. Several different explinations, but if I had to decide which was right E20 sounds like it is unable to read the table of contents on the cd itself. When mine did it it came up as E20 but if I swiched to the changer it still played the cds. Will it play them?

Just a thought... have you tried using a commercial (bought) CD, not just burned ones? The factory HU is not reliable at playing certain brands of CD-Rs and won't play CD-RWs at all.

Mines doing this too, i took mine apart and cleaned the lens and that didn't work. I have to fiddle with the CD for about 10 to 15min's before it will play then it's fine the rest of the day. I may try to clean it again this week, it's really annoying thats for sure lol.

You could have it repaired at a Delco repair center but that would probably cost as much as replacing it. There are always Monsoon HUs for sale in the For Sale section here. You should be able to get one for under $100.

Another option (at least with 2000 and newer models) is to get an auxiliary adapter such as the GM9-AUX, plug in an MP3 player and forget about CDs.

I use to have the same problem, but then I moved out of a high humidity climate and now it works, but only with factory CD's not burned ones.

I'm not sure if this fixed my cd player or not yet, but it hasn't givin me the code in 3 days it usually gives me the code everyday after the car has sat over night. But i read somewhere in my search that it's a common problem with these radios being a bad laser or bad spindle motor and that causes the E20 code. It said you can clean the laser and spray a Cleaner/Lubricant into the openings on the bottom of the spindle motor.

I sprayed some WD-40 into the openings and spun it around a few times and slapped it back together. You have to get to the CD player inside the radio take it out and take the black plastic cover off and undo the circuit board and remove it to get to the spindle motor, you'll need a small phillips and a couple different small starhead screwdrivers. Both burned and commerical cd's seem to be working fine at the moment. I'm guessing the humidity effects the spindle motor.

I got the same thing about 75% of the time before I just went and replaced it..

Sounds 1000x better, can play ipod/zune/etc, and is way more aesthetic.. Monsoon just wasnt worth the hassle honestly, I tried cleaning it n all that **** but nothing worked

I dont know but for me the monsoon just fits in pontiac interior and the red glow fits, I dont like how an aftermarket unit looks with the stock red glow, but of course thats just my opinion

That's why i like it too, it drove me crazy when i put my oil pressure gauge in and it didn't match but if you put the red light condom on it matches perfectly. Also another big factor is i just lost my job a few weeks ago so spending extra cash on a radio isnt in the cards at the moment, and i knew it couldn't be that hard to fix the problem. My fix job seems to be working perfectly at the moment .

I put in the Alpine CDA9886.

To others: This HU is has option for red/blue, of course I use the red, and the text is white, it matches perfectly.
