Default Gauge cluster fire/smoke. . .

Quick & short:

Bought another cluster w/overlay on it.
Installed it and upon pressing the connection into place, smoke above the left corner started coming out.

Particulars:
My car - 2001 Z
Cluster going in - unknown year, BUT it's got 3 pins for needle travel limits
2 on tach (below 0, at limit of 7K) and 1 on speedo limit just past 150.

Took the overlay off and put it onto my cluster - most lights line up except where the overlay has the highbeam indication, behind it I've got something that says 'service' behind it - it's inside the sweep of the tach.

My cluster - 1 pin for travel limits for tach low.

1. any idea what year the cluster I've bought is from?
2. anyone ever had smoke coming out of their cluster?

Thanks

D

Yup. Thats a 98 cluster. They have a few of the lights changed around and the connector is the same, but the wires are completely different.

The thing about electronics is that they only have a limited amount of smoke in them. Once you let out the smoke they don't work anymore.
