Default Simple ground wire question

I've read a number of posts and have not found a direct answer for my question which is...

Does the ground wire from my head unit have to go to a chasis ground or can it be grounded through the wire harness adapter?

I am currently wiring up an Alpine CDA-117 head unit wire harness to a Scosche GM02 (not GM02B...it's old). I am also wiring in a SWI-JACK adapter which also needs to be grounded. I was thinking that I could just cut the end off of the Alpine wire harness ground wire and tie all three ground wires (head unit, Scosche, SWI-JACK) together. This would then ground everything through the factory ground wire in the wire harness.
