Well as far as brands go you will get alot of opinions. Mine is Viper or pretty much any of the DEI lines.

Mile of range will be doubtful, only ones that might get that kind of range would be the add on units that use the cars radio ant to transmitt the signal. Most of those types of units you will have to piggy back on top of another alarm.

I would go with the new Viper or Python 2 way responder alarms, they work very good and have quite few useful features. Downside is the max range on the 2-way is around 1500' and the 2-way remote is kinda big.

Get DEI Viper 791XV! I got it about a month ago and LOVE IT!! A little pricey, but just look at all the features you get! I added the 508D field disturbance sensor and the 530T window automation system for added security and convienence!

Alarms are only as good as the installer.

Range is relative to the environment, I would not get more then a couple blocks if parked in a building or in a city area. perhaps if I was in the middle of a desert, I'd get the manufacturer stated range of up to a mile.

Get what you like(asthetically and functionality) and what you can afford.
