Fans wont come on after opti/water pump changed

Fans wont come on after opti/water pump changed finished up my water pump/opti change and now the car overheats at idle because the fans wont come on. they worked fine when i took them off. I did put dielectric grease in the fan plugs before i put then in to keep any water out. would that have caused them not to work? i havent changed the relays yet. i might see if they come on by powering them directly. any suggestions on what i should check?
