Default 02 radio

Will the 02 and up radio fit in the 99-01 silverados. I got one for free so can i just plug it in or will it need some custom wiring. Also are there any benefits such as more watts RMS or anything else other than the RDS. I really hope this will work because im planning on using the old tape deck for a custom ipod hook up. Thanks.

Most GM trucks (and other vehicles) changed the design of the radio in 02 (some in 03). The new head unit is double DIN rather than 1.5 DIN so they won't even fit in the older opening. In addition, the new radios have a lot more circuitry that is involved in other vehicle systems such as the keyless entry and alarm. The new radios are on the data bus so the connections are different as well.
