Default Brightest "RED" instrument panel bulb?

I have the Granatelli 200mph speedo mod. They said something about the gauges are made Camaro green and that I would have to take 194 bulbs and coat them with a translucent red paint for the red lighting. I did this but at the brightest setting its still difficult to see the gauges well. Is there a brighter dash bulb available, in red, that I could use? At first I tried just 194a's and it was really bad.

Try some 194 Xenon's from Macewen. That's what most people replace their stock bulbs with (if they choose not to go with LED's which tend to produce hot spots). I think you'll need around 7? I forget how many exactly, but someone else should know.

Try this:
http://autolumination.com/194.htm

They have inverted and other different 194 bulbs that shouldn't create hot spots and are decent priced. Just a suggestion and someone I've done business with several times. He also has Xenon 194 bulbs too.

Another option is to just use a common bulb that is brighter. The 194 is a 2 candlepower bulb. You can replace it with a 168 which is 3 CP (50% brighter) and available at every auto parts store. Or, you could go with a 175 which is 5 CP (150% brighter) although that may generate too much heat for a plastic housing. The 175 is somewhat less common but you should still be able to find them at NAPA or someplace similar. Both the 168 and 175 are wedge bulbs exactly the same size as the 194 so they're direct plug-in replacements.
