Default OEM CD Changer? Pioneer?

I just bought a 99 T/A and it has a 12 disc changer in the back hooked up to what looks like an OEM harness. Didn't say GM anywhere on it so I took it out and it's a Pioneer CDX-M2116? Were the OEM Changers made by Pioneer? or is this an aftermarket unit?

I can get pics tonight after 7pm PST if needed.

Reason I need to know is that it doesn't have a cartridge and I'm getting bored of the radio and it's commercials.

The 12-disc factory changer is indeed made by Pioneer. You can use Pioneer cartridge JDT-1212.

Question

Can you use a Pioneer Head unit to control the factory cd changer?

I'd like to replace my head unit, but like having the changer.

No, you can't replace the factory head unit and have the factory CD changer work with an aftermarket radio - not even a Pioneer one. (Even though the changer was made by Pioneer, it was made to GM specs to connect to the Delco/Monsoon head unit.) Of course, changers have become quite affordable so you could replace both the head unit and the changer with aftermarket units without breaking the bank.
