Not to be rude, but that radar detector doesn't work well at all. I usto own one, and it would give me too many false alerts. I upgraded to the Escort, and I am very please. I would return the unit and get a better radar detector..

Cobra has some of the worst radar detectors I have used a number of Escort ones and they always have worked really well.

well I tested it out after school and it didn't go off one time driving through town, I didn't see any cops either. So I decided to drive by the police station and it went off at about 200 yds away. Is that far enough?

Radar detectors can also be set off by automatic doors as they usually use "X" band radar. Most police cars use "K" and "Ka" frequencies.

If you pass by a police station, you should get detection all that means is that it works. Any run of the mill radar detector should catch this.. Thats been around for atleast 20 years... But technology has changed, and that is what you need to keep up with. In the day cops would keep the radar gun on all the time, this would allow you more than enough time to detect them and slow down, then cops started pointing the gun at the floorboard or away from the road, this was to weaken the signal, but even now detectors can detect that.. Now regardless of the bands used, there is a new system known as POP -- this is where a cop can turn his radar detector off and on within record time. Because older and cheaper radard detectors are filtering out 'false' signals they have to recieve a signal at a certain level for a specific amount of time within milliseconds to then determine wether it is false or real. Thats where inferiority comes into place, if a cop can now turn off his detector within 1 second and back on, your radar detector will show no sign becuase it would had been filtered out as a false alarm. There is one fallback for the cop , for the amount of time that the cops detector is on, it is at full power, then when he turns it off it is at no power. A POP radar detector can detect this and alert you before hand while maintaining a filter that will get rid of most false alarms. There is a downfall towards you, POP is only used by a cop when cars ahead of you are being gunned, if you are the only person in the area and he turns in on at you, you detect it, but later than he would have accumulated your speed. A radar detector cannot detect radar if the cop has his turned off... Keep that in mind...I own a Passport 8500 x50, which is the addition of POP radar. Now, POP is not in every area, and not every cop will have it, so you need to check what the technology is in your area. Valentine 1 is of the better radar detectors you can buy, however it is very bulky, but it allows you the number count of detectors it picks up as well as in which direction they come from. Passport is the size of a regular detector and it can pick up just as well and even excels in some bands vs the Valentine 1. One major reason I like the passport is its size and its ability to be upgraded to newer technology when the time comes. Valentines major ad promotion vs Passport is that POP is not activated on the Passport whereas it is on the Valentine, like I said it is only in select areas so if you are in an area with no POP, why have it on. Passport does allow you to program the hell out of it, and you can turn it on within 5 seconds and it will stay on until you turn it off. Don't let that fool you, I deal with customers everyday telling me that the Valentine comes with everything operational, the Passport does as well, it just happens to be turned off when you first buy the product.

They have RADAR out there?????

A little clarification about POP radar... POP is a pulse radar signal sent automatically by the radar gun for an extremely short period (measured in milliseconds). It is not directly controlled by the officer - i.e. he doesn't trigger it then turn it off, he just triggers it and it is done before he can even get his finger off the switch. However, regardless of what the gun reads he can't ticket you with that information. If it shows excessive speed then he must use conventional radar to get an accurate speed clocking that will be valid in court. This gives you a little time to slow down IF your detector can pick up and doesn't filter out the POP signals.
