Default Best Head Unit?

I have someone that wants to buy my Clarion, but I'm not sure what to get to replace it. I had a Pioneer DEHP8400MP but the dual face mechanism borked up and I ended up selling it as a repairable deck on ebay... the Pioneer did sound better, but I'm afraid of getting another high $ deck that will jack up on me in the near future. The 9600 they have now looks to have that same dual face design and is not cheap at all. I've looked at just about every top end CD player and the Pioneer still seems better with the mp3 enhancer and features. Has anyone used this deck, and had any problems with the dual face setup?

Any thoughts on other brands?

I think I've decided on the Pioneer Premier DEH-P860MP. It has the same features as the 960 for the most part but uses a more normal single face design. It's also a little less $$. If anyone has the 860 and has a comment feel free to post.

Cool

I would look at the alpine or eclipse decks. Personally I like the looks of the alpine better and they both have better sq than the pioneers.

IF you get another Pioneer deck, definitly get the Premier line. (the 860MP is a premier deck.) Only $10-20 more, but comes with some more features.

I'm a fan of pioneer. From what I've seen, the motorized parts have gotten better. My P1R lasted 6 years before it's motor went out.

I have a pioneer premier 860 mp. it is amazing, you can tune damn near everything and it's easy to run through the options while going down the road and not getting into an accident. the deck right now is sitting in the garage because the RCA's need to be refurbed, but other than that no complaints at all. the display is cool as hell, the steering wheel mounted controller is nice too....personally i'd recommend pioneer anyway, it's user friendly, and a good quality product. the 9600 does have the same split face as the 8400, 8500 have, i believe they have made fixes for the old problems but i'm not positive.

Premier line gets my vote too.
They are the best in my experience.

refurbing them, requires them to figure out what is causing them to drop signal, because they will still send signal to an amp, it's just not putting out the voltage it should. then fix the problem and send it back to me.

I see.. So in other words, the audio output section (or likely the entire head unit) is being refurbished.

The RCA connector is just that.. A connector. Short of replacing the it, there's not much else to refurbish (in terms of rca's).

Thanks for the clarification.

I like my Eclipse CD8455 alot. The price has come down to 500.00 (from 600.00).

I like to tell people it was made by aliens; there are way too many options.

I used to have the Pioneer 940MP, and loved it. Very easy to use, of course the book was thick as crap though. I didn't have the steering wheel remote, I had the credit card one.

The most common cause of rca failure is loosing the ground path on the rca shield. This is caused by installing rcas to an amp before grounding it or and amp with a bad ground trying to reference ground through the rca's. It can be fixed my wiring the shield of the rca's back to the chassis of the deck.

I just ordered a DEH-P8600mp, not the premier but basicly the same thing. i did some asking where premier is sold and basicly the only difference is the better rca outputs and an extra year on warranty. I paid $325 shipped for mine brand new. It should be comming byt he end of the week or beginning of next week. I have a pioneer deh-p6500 in my 91 convt. and i put it in my ss for the time being until i get the new one, and i like it as well. just wanted a better looking deck and wanted to play mp3's.

Now im on the hunt for replacement speakers. I need a 6.5" sub for the rear seats, and 6.5's for the doors. I checked my trunk speakers and they are already 4 ohm speakers so im leaving them alone. update us when you get your new pioneer in.

I just sold my Premier DEH-P8MP in favor of a Clarion dxz945 because of the touch screen it. It was a very awesome, powerful and unique deck though.

The Eclipse deck doesn't look that great to me... but anyway. I'll be ordering soon, will finally get this all sorted out in the next week or so. I'm stuck building spacer rings for these "direct replacement" Audiobahn ABC600T component speakers and having all sorts of other issues that keep slowing me down.

I have the DEH-P770MP and I love it (it is a premier deck). No mechanics within the faceplate, just press the button and it flops down... just the way I like it. I've seen to many motors freeze up... plus even w/ MP3 discs im still always changing CDs

Very correct. You could try reading resistance from the Ground (outside part) of the RCA to the Chasis see what is going on. The Amplifier does need a referance to do it's work and loss or degraded GND can cause what you are talking about.
