Default Headunits with IR remote

I am a little confused. To use my steering wheel controls w/ an aftermarket headunit, I know I need an IR remote. I've read about the IR adapter. If I had the adapter, does the stereo need IR remote? Been looking online for different stereos but only found one with IR remote, but I found a bunch with wireless remote control. Is it the same thing?

same thing. Wireless remotes utilize infrared or "IR". Most headunits with a remote will work but look at the adapters compatability instructions to double check.
