Default HELP! does anyone know why the fogs turn off when the high beams are on?

Why did GM do that to the LS1 Trans Ams? Why do the fogs turn off when the brights are on?

is there a reason? if i do plan on doing a mod that would let the fogs stay on with the bright lights am i going to abuse the car in any way?

hope i get an answer from someone that really knows what they're talking about. <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" />

DOT regulations require aux lamps to turn off when the high beams are turned on.

If you look under the hood there are two black plastic boxes. Pop the top off the one that has the fog light relay in it (it will say on the diagram which one it is), and the pull the fog light relay out. It's a gray square with 4 prongs coming out of the bottom of it. Look where you just took it out from and you will see the holes where the 4 prongs went (they are numbered). I'm not sure of the exact numbers but you will see for yourself.
<img src="http://bingweb.binghamton.edu/~bg24149/images/CarPictures/highbeams&fogs2.jpg" alt=" - " />
That black wire is what replaces the fog light relay. When you pull out the fog light relay you will see the 4 holes were the prongs on the relay went, look at that picture and connect those two holes with the wire.
Any questions, PM me and ask. If you want to know what exact holes you connect I will look on my car and let you know the numbers. But right now, it's dark out.
And...then you should have your fog lights stay on with your high beams. I've had this done on my car for over a year now and had no problems with it messing up any of the electronics on the car, so I wouldn't worry about that. And I have passed by cops all the time with my fog lights and high beams on and never had a problem. Also, if you get tired of it, you just simply put the relay back in it's place and everything is back to stock.

hey SS 414 thanks for the detailed info.

just wanted to ask you a few questions. Will that mod make the fogs, the high beams and the low beams all work together all the time?

I would want the high beams to be on with the foglights but are you saying that this mod will only let the fog lights stay on when the high beams are used?

I posted 2 posts and im kind of getting confused of what your talking about? But I really do appreciate you helping me out...

please fill me in with some info.

here's my email if you could send me some detailed stuff i would really appreciate it aka9399@hotmail.com

thanks in advance.

I noticed that you have a Camaro. Does this work for the TA, as all 4 headlamps light when we go to brights? I don't know if the Camaro does this or not. After the jumper mod, can you switch the fogs on/off normally with regular beams on???

As far as having the fog lights stay on with the high beams (which is what I have previously described this does), yes it will work on an LS1 (T/A or Camaro).

As far as maintaining the ability of manually being able to turn on and off your fog lights, you will not have that anymore. The fog lights will be on anytime you have your lights on. For example, when you have your low beams on (the fog lights will be on), when you have the high beams on (your fog lights will be on), when you have just your parking lights on (your fog lights will be on), and when you activate/deactivate the alarm (your fog lights will flash). Get it guys? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
Lastly, I personally do not know how to have all 6 lights on (high's, low's, and fog's). However like someone previously mentioned in this post, I do remember a member on LS1.com (named XBCHBUM) who knew how to do it, gave detailed instructions, and I think even sold a relay to plug in (instead of cutting wires). I'm not sure if he is still around there, this was a while ago.

Thanks, that was a good clear description. However as you may have guessed, it isn't quite what I was looking for. This will no doubt have all 6 lights lit on a TA in the high beam mode as low beams and high beams come on together from the factory on TA's when set on high beam and this mod allows the fogs to come on as well. But I would still like to be able to control the on/off function of the fogs when low beams are on (don't care about turning them off in high beam).
I think I remember the guy you are talking about. He was mentioning something about adding a relay. I'll keep my antenna up for that.

Thanks a lot for your explanation on this mod though.

i have done it to my camaro. all you have to do is have 2 relays (one for the fog and one for the high beams). all you do is use the high beam wire whis is green on the camaro and use it to close the coil on the relay( i think that it it #30) then use a 12v source and connect it to #86 and use the wire form the low beams (tan wire in my car, and purle for the fog) and connect it opposite to the 12v wire at post #85. connect a ground to the remaining post #87. this way the high beam acitvates the coil in the relay and closes it which puts a 12v source running to the fogs and the low beams. i have had mine done this way for over 86mtns. and have had no negative side affects. i would post a picture of my setup by have not figure out how to do this. i hope this helps.

I got what you need. 2 mods that can be used separately or together to meet your personal needs.
1 mod allows all 4 headlights to run when the high beams are on. It's super easy and requires one inline 30A fuse housing and fuse.
The other mod allows you to turn your foglamps on or off no matter if you are running high or low beams. This mod retains FULL use of the switch and you CAN turn off the fogs.
Done together, these mods allow you to have as few as 2 or as many as 6 forward lights on at once when you have your headlights on.
Here are the mods, copied and pasted from an old LS1.com thread:

I have been asking around about this for some time and no one seems to have a way to do it. I had my car apart a couple of months ago figuring out what each wire does and I altered the wiring slightly. Now my fogs come on with park lamps, low beams, and now high beams. The function is totally the same... the switch lights, it is still backlit, and turns the fogs on and off as before. I also did a super easy mod that puts all 4 headlights on with the high beams.
So now I can run 4 headlights and the fogs at once!
The foglamp freedom mod... (on with high beams if you so choose):
Going into the back of the fog switch there is a green wire, cut it. Insulate the car side as it will no longer will be needed and does go hot when the high beams are on. Add a little wire to the switch side of the green wire and ground under one of the radio mount bolts. Put the switch and radio trim back together. You're done inside the car. Go under the hood, pull up the relay box with the fan and fog relays in it. Going into the bottom of the fog relay is the same green wire, cut it. Extend the relay side about 8" with black wire and ground it. I used the ground screw right next to the relay box, on the strut tower. Insulate the car side of the cut wire as it goes hot with the high beams. Put everything back together and you are done.
Easy 4 light high beam free mod:
4 screws under the drivers side dash allows access under the steering column. Look down the left side of the steering column and there is a white switch with a brown plug and 2 black tabs. Squeeze black tabs and pull the connector off. Make a connection between the large tan wire and the large yellow wire and put everything back together... I used an inline fuse housing, flat fuse housing type, to connect the tan and yellow wires as instructed. They are available at Wal-Mart (or about anywhere), with a 30 amp fuse. That's what I used, just for safety.
Dave

Edit: I have a Camaro, I have no idea if a Pontiac is the same or not!

Rather than bridging a wire between the 2 in the instructions, he totally cut and put the 2 wires together.
I let him know what he needs to do, but he forgot where the wires came from now. I don't have access to my car at the moment to tell him which pin each wire came from.
