Default Sub blew, need thoughts on high end replacement.

I had a 05 model 10" Kicker L7 2 ohm DVC (the square sub). I haven't been driving the TA so I put my system in the beater. Anyways, I was at a light today and it seems my sub just stopped working. Well i'm almost sure its not the amp because its powered up and no blown fuses. I took the sub out and the voice coils are brittle and torn/cracked. I forget, am I not suppse to be able to push the cone down really easy, because thats what happens. I tried putting some voltage to the coils to get the sub to move and does nothing. Oh well.....it was good while it lasted.

I've been outta the audio game for a while now. I'm looking for a nice replacement and not sure whats good anymore. I might get the same thing again, but I want a sub that can handle my amp better. Its gotta be 2 ohm DVC for starters. My amp is 1 ohm stable with 750 RMS....1500 MAX. I can't fit a 12" square sub in the driver side cubby hole...my 10" is just right. I can however fit a 12" round sub which I might end up doing.

I guess just throw some brands/models at me that are top of the line as far as SPL goes.

Yeah you've already got a box with a square hole, might as well get the new L7.

Thats the thing....I need to cut the box up anyways. I custom made it with fiberglass. It needs to go inward at least an inch because it touches the T-tops at rest so then I can't play it.

Solo Barics are pretty much top of the line, I'd stick with the S10L7 if I were you. They have been proven to produce more bass than the CVR.

Kickers are notoriuos for coil damage. Depending on the usage, they only last a couple of years. You can have them refurbished, but they won't sound the same.

If you're gonna go 12 inch and round, I'd suggest JL Audio W6 or W3. They are the only subs (to my knowledge) that compare the to the Solo Barics.

Check out the Boston Acoustic G5 . If your amp can do ~450wrms @ 2ohms, it would be an awesome sub.

Kicker subs are far from top of the line.
JL W6 and W3 are in a totally different category than the L5/L7. They do not compare in any way.

HotWhip, whats your budget for the new sub?

the l5 and l7 are close to the same. Last years l7 is this years l5. Kicker does some weird crap. I vote MA 12. Or do another kicker they are good. dont to the comp vr's they just dont compare to the L series.

My vote goes for Image Dynamics, RE, or Elemental designs. They work well in small enclosures and have good build quality. I am a big fan of kicker but these subs have a little better SQ.

I second RE Audio, The JL 10W7 or the Focal 27KX. Morel makes some nice stuff as well. Those are top of the line 10" subs. Kicker is not even close to those IMHO.

It's funny how people will use the term "Top of the Line". I've been an audio freak for years and I once had someone ask me to spec them out a top of the line home audio system. I asked several times what their budget was and they kept saying "whatever it costs, I want it". That was before I spec'd out a system that was over 100k. At that point they said "Well, best for 2k"

Know your budget and try to get the best sub that fits that budget. There is always "better" if your willing to pay for it. Kicker has a good middle of the road subwoofer. If you want "high end" prepare to pay 650-850 for a high end 10" sub.

Well, most of yall don't know but my car is in a billion pieces right now. Its quite literally Overhaulin' in my garage. Basically everthing is either being upgraded, replaced or painted. I don't really have the money for this mess right now.

I was thinking maybe an Image Dynamics IDMax V3, but they are pricy. I've basically made my decision though. I know where I can get a brand new 12" Kicker CVX for a price I can swing. Thats their new sub with L7 components in a round desgin....its perfect for me!

Truthfully, I dont care for the sound of the L7's. They sound a little off and require too much box space to hit right. Though the 10's dont seem to be as bad as the 12's & 15's. Thost Kicker CVX's sound like they would be good. I prefer round subs as far as sound. JL is one of my favorite company's. They stand by there stuff and if you blow em they will replace them with no questions asked. Or atleast they did for me

Listen to this man. Other good brands: Boston Acoustics, Fi, TC Sounds, Dayton (reference series only), Adire (if you can find 'em), Ascendant (if you can find 'em)...

Adire is closed, Ascendant just released their new subs!!

By the way, the CVX is NOT the L7 in round design. I like the CVX much better than the L7, though, so you should be happy with it.

You can still buy some of Adire's stuff around, though.

I had 2 of those 12" Pioneer Premier SPL2000's or whatever they were in my old Camaro. I didn't like them a whole lot. Good for the money though. Its like $120 on ebay. It was probably a combo of the box and pushing them too hard.

I am a Kenwood fan here, even though I use a Kicker CVR12. The kicker has way better sound q but the kenwood I had hit harder. I am happy with the Kicker though.

Yea, so I just bought a Elemental Design 13Ov.2. Looks really nice and the specs are slightly better than the Kicker CVX I was going to buy. I haven't had an ED sub, so I figured I'd try it out! I've heard nothing but good things!
