I had Dayton speakers of 3" depth in my doors with 3/4" MDF spacers. I broke one of my window tracks because it was just barely bumping the speaker - not enough to stop or for me to notice, but enough to do damage. It apparently did not hit on the other side, no damage to that. So I'd hesitate to recommend more than 2 1/4", maybe 2 3/8" at most using the stock plastic braket. I may have gotten unlucky.

I use and highly recommend these: http://car.rainbow-audio.de/products...n=7&art=231415

Ive put in EDI 6000s in 3 different peoples cars. I always rip out the stock baffle and replace with 1/4 mdf, the speakers have a mounting depth of 2.95 so you are deff safe with that

If you use spacers, no problem with the door panel and grille?

i can only attest to the 1/4" spacer no problems at all. I do the 1/4 because IMO the stock plastic is garbage.
