Default 96 Z28 LT1 6spd vs New and modded Honda Civic Si

Just got back from the strip the night before and still had the #'s on the side of my car. Apparently thats an invitation to race on the street as well. I was cruising down a 4 lane and started to chase a 99-04 style Saleen (bout 5pm). Finally got beside the car and the *HOT* woman driving took the next turn I should have gave chase but I was on my way to a party and noticed a new Civic Si up ahead.
He had exhaust and I don't know what else because he wouldn't stop to talk...but he looked over and nodded and revved his awesome engine. I have a crap cai and junkmaster muffler and 130k on the clock. We paced each other for about 2 miles until traffic opened up. I told him to slow down to 40 mph and I put my car in 2nd. I look over and make eye contact with my hand held up (didn't know if he knew 3 honks since we did this on the fly). I count to 3 and wait for him to go. It sounded like he downshifted but wouldn't go, so I pointed for him to go, and he finally kicked it. I was ready, so I powershifted 3rd about 6000 rpms...then @ the top of third I was about 2 cars ahead but quickly catching traffic so I pulled in front of him and powershifted 4th. I put another 2-3 cars on him and he instantly turned around and went the other way.
I haven't had a street race in a long time, so I'll take it even though I picked on a small fry. I could tell he wanted to race or I wouldn't have even bothered. I was still pumped from the night before and this was a lil icing on the cake. I was actually surprised that he even hung with me that well being a seemingly lightly modded NA (I'm assuming) 4cyl. I'm just glad I was in my daily driver or it would have been nasty and pointless..atleast it was somewhat of a race with the ol stock lt1.

I know..it was a big puppy kick like jester said......but I smiled the whole time while doing it. Street races are hard to come by in my area unless you're up late on a saturday night..and then the cops are waiting on you. Nobody expected us to be racing on a fairly uncongested highway @ 5 pm on a friday.

Yes I'd imagine the excuses will fly but is that anything we're not used to?!

This made me laugh since your next sentence is you trying to instigate a race, haha.

Good kill on the Civic. I still can't believe they rated those new Civics at 197...they must really be maxed out if they can't squeeze that extra 3 hp out of it

How'd you do at the track? Any plans to mod up the LT1?

horrible...spun to a 2.3 60' on junk hard street tires and still managed a 9.3 @ 80 in the 1/8th. That was my one and only baseline run as I can't stand to go that slow. I can't leave anything stock so of course it'll be modded. I'm thinking something simple like a gear, axles, tires, some juice and a tune. That should wake it up quite nicely for a daily driver.

i dont wanna say good kill, because that was too easy. but leave the powershifting for th FI guys, its for staying in boost. theres really no reason to if you are N/A unless you hate your tranny.

best f body sleeper IMO would be an lt1 z28 or formula debadged with a 400+ CUBE LS motor + an STS turbo (even though i hate them, great for the sleeper thing).

Numbers definitely look to be in line based on the 60'. My autos ran 9.09 @ 78.7 (2.20 60") and 9.27 @ 76.9 (2.14 60'). The first was a 1994 TA with 3.23's and the second was a 1994 Z28 with 2.73's. Looks like you have a healthy motor to start with at least. Those mods should make for a fun as hell daily driver with an extra kick when you need it

What does your 98 run?

Good kill man, sounds like the Civic had intake/exhaust and a good driver to hang that semi-close to you.

Or unless you like shaving a tenth or two off your ET.

exactly..it doesn't matter whats done to the motor...you're gonna pick up time if you powershift..ask any decent street or drag racer..as long as you have a good shifter, a trans rated for the power and you can drive decently powershifting is not a problem..I powershift everything every race..to me thats "all out" which is the way I like it.

What part of nc are u from ?
we'll just say west of charlotte since this is in the street racing section...but I've been known to travel if you'd like to hang out and do some racing

What does your 98 run?
so far a 7.7 @ 93 on motor spinning about 10 feet out. I'm going to run it at charlotte nov.4th on nitrous now that its hooking somewhat decent. I'm going to delay the nitrous and try to launch like I did on motor. Its going to be cooler and charlotte isn't known for hooking on a tnt night so we'll see. I'd venture its prolly good for low 11s on gas

You always wan't to powershift, no matter what combo your running. It's optimal for performance. It's only when your power level exceeds the capabilities of your tranny that granny-shifting is necessary.

Not bad at all. What size shot are you going to run? Let us know how it does, and good luck.

not arguing that powershifting will make you faster, just saying your tranny will hate you for it.

Whether your running NA or FI it will make your car go faster and will do the same amount of damage to the trans in either case, so why is it ok for FI to do it, but not NA? Just trying to understand your reasoning.
