Default 1st kill in the Formula! VW GTI

I was driving home, merging onto a local highway. I saw a car coming up quickly behind me, and accelerated to keep pace as he passed me. It was a newer VW GTI, with a catback exhaust and probably some other mods. It had an RSW (Redline Speed Worx, a local VW tuner) decal on the rear side window. There was some traffic here and there, so we couldn't get a run in. We played cat-and-mouse for a couple miles until the traffic cleared. I pulled even with him, then punched it in 4th gear to let him know I was ready to go. We pulled up to a red light, with both our windows down.

Him: "That thing's pretty fast." (I think he said it kind of sarcastically, but maybe it was just me)
Me: *nods* "Yup." (Wow, good comeback. )

At this point, the opposite light was turning yellow, so we both got ready to launch. The light turned green, and we both rolled out slow in first gear (it was a little wet). We both shifted to 2nd about the same time, and we both spun the tires. I was about a bumper ahead at this point. We catch some traction, and I start to take off. Shift to third, and I have about a 1/2 a car length on him. I wind out 3rd, briefly touching the rev limiter, and slam it into 4th. Now I'm a little over a car length ahead. I know I've got him, and run about halfway through 4th before shifting to 5th and shutting it down soon after. At the next stoplight, his only excuse was "It's kinda wet out." I asked him what he had in the car, but the light turned green and we started moving before he could answer. All in all, a pretty good run.

Yea a good friend of mine has a new R32. A+ interior wise and seat wise. Also very cool to have launch control in an automatice awd car.

If the VW was stock your comment may have been warranted. It is obvious that it was not stock.

When I used to be more into the import scene, I would hear myths of them becoming ungodly fast with simple bolt ons and upped boost. My only experience with one, they claimed to have had close to $5k into the car, and it REALLY didn't show. I'm guessing it wasn't just motor.

I could be wrong, but I'm going to assume he had some decent work done for you to pull him like you did with your #'s. Who really knows, though.

I know he had more done to the car than just a catback exhaust. However, I think the race was close due to:

1. Wet road + worn tires
2. My own stupidity (spinning in 2nd, running into the rev limiter in 3rd)

I was really starting to pull away after shifting to 4th. Given optimal conditions (dry road, new tires), I think I would've put a lot more than almost 1 1/2 car lengths on him.

SLP lid/smooth bellow/CAI, Pacesetter longtubes, ORY, Borlamouth, LS2 flywheel/LS7 clutch, 4.10s, BMR panhard bar and LCAs. It was tuned by Cartek. All of the mods were done by the previous owner, who ran a 12.5 @ 115 MPH on drag radials with it. I've already started collecting parts for a H/C swap.

nice kill... sucks it was wet, with traction it would have been better.

Even modified, they aren't that impressive. Most of the aftermarket tuning for VW's references power gains at the engine...not wheels (ex. the APR 93 ecu reflash on my old 1.8T). There aren't many VW's running around with 230+ whp.

.
it's hard to consider lack of traction a factor on your side when you raced a turbo fwd car. I never owned a fwd car that was stellar from a dig. Still a good kill, though.

Y'all can hate on GTI's all you want but before i got into muscle i had a '87 GTI with a full AMU225 (Audi TT) swap, GT3582R (GT35R) turbo running 26PSI, 175 shot venom direct port kit, with a few suspension mods here and there sitting on Mickey Thompson 24x8x15 slicks tuned by Performance Unlimited in VA beach, VA and it would put down 8.13 sec 1/4's consecutively, but would still spin all four tires with the slicks heated up.

If you put enough money into anything, you can make it fast. If it weighs half as much as the vehicle the donor engine was pulled from...that doesn't hurt either.
