Default Turbo Z28 vs. Turbo 03 Cobra

Had my first real run since the car has been put together. I have about 700 miles or so on the setup and the tune is pretty safe at this point.

Anyway, Friday night my buddy and I were cruising around downtown when we spotted an 03 Cobra. He rolled up next to us after hearing a little spool from my $300 turbo and asked if we wanted to race. I was in the passenger seat (let my buddy drive for a bit since he basically built the car for me) and I think the guys were shocked when I basically yelled "Yes!"

We pulled over and talked for a few minutes, checking out the cars. His car had the single Hellion kit with a Turbonetics 76mm on an otherwise stock motor I do believe and pump gas. He said he was on 14-15 psi. My mods are in my sig and I have no idea of any power or track numbers. We agreed on a 40 mph roll since we were both on Nittos and it was fairly cool out.

We roll out to the highway and got 3 runs in quick. First run on the initial hit he spun bad, and the *** end got squirly so he let out. Next run was clean. On the initial hit he jumped about a half car. We stayed dead even until we let out of it. We slowed down for one last run. This time I brake boosted better (he did on all three runs) and he didn't jump out as far. Again, we stayed even until 140 or so. I was shocked that I hung with him.

My rev limiter is set at 6000 rpm, and the car was shifting around 5900. Again, the tune is safe, and the car hasn't been running long. Also, after looking at the logs of the runs, I was only seeing 10.5 psi. It would spike to 13.5 and settle at the 10.5. This was the first night I actually went WOT in the car and let it roll out through the gears so I was never sure on what boost it would make at WOT. There is a 13lb spring in the gate.

We met back up after the runs and talked a bit. He was a real cool guy and told me that he ran his car at the track a few weeks ago and it ran a 10.9 @ 131. He also participated in the "Mini Cash Days" thing in Omaha about a month ago. He was impressed on how well my car ran and didn't expect it to be dead even like that.

Sorry about not getting it on video. My buddy didn't bring his camera since he didn't think we would find anything to run. I need to mess with the boost controller to see if I can get some more boost out of it too. Also need to get the finishing touches on the tune done. I am sure there will be another encounter with the Cobra.

Thoughts? Here is a link to my build thread if anyone cares to look...

Good runs man. Got a few questions for you. When doing a roll on with that trans are you sticking it in 2nd and shifting to 3rd or are you just keeping it in 3rd the whole time. I don't do a whole lot of roll races and was curious what seems to be working for you. As for your turbo, you have a 6.0 iron block right? Keep in mind that those cheap on3 turbo's have small turbine wheels so the thing will spool quick, but then hit a wall and drop boost as well. I see it with alot of guys trying to push more than 12-13psi and I could see it being worse with more CI.

Consider getting a pt7675 or the new turbonetics 7675 down the road. Should allow you to hit more boost without choking on the turbine wheel.

I drop it down into 2nd and after the hit kick it back up into 3rd.

The logs showed that the spike lasts only a few tenths of second then drops down and settles in. I know the turbo is too small for my application but it seems to be pulling well to the 6000 rpm redline, lol. It does spool insanely quick and makes for a fun street car. I have plans to upgrade the turbo to a Turbonetics 7875 sometime next spring/summer. I would like to see what I can get out of this cheap little guy once it's fully tuned and I figure out the boost controller.

Yep, it was the blue one. He's in the first race of the mini cash days video on youtube.

Good luck with it, the 7875 would suit you very well. I'll have to keep that in mind when I do more roll races. What sort of boost controller are you using and how much boost are you shooting for? The best I could get out of my TC78 with dinky 68mm turbine is 17.5 with heavy taper and loss of power up top. Going with a pt7675 which should be better matched to the CI and TU1 setup.

I am using an AEM Tru-Boost my buddy had laying around. I only have a 2 bar MAP so ideally would like to only be at 14-15 psi. Haven't really discussed that with the tuner. MaxxMitchell is doing the tune and judging by how well skinnies and automagics cars run, mine should be no slouch once it's dialed in, ha.

Nice kill, Andy!

I can speak for how well this car runs. I was in absolute shock how well the budget build rolls out. It definitely needs some suspension work/tires. The NT05Rs don't stand a chance once it hits boost.

Kind of made me wish I did this build when Dave was harassing me about it.

Let me know when you actually get a clean run with Mel

In for possible Cobra fanboi shitstorm

Thanks, Marc. You need to pick up a cheap Fbody and make it happen.

Nice runs! Now I'd like to run him if I lived closer seeing as we have almost an identical setup on the same boost, but my 2v traps just as high!

The spike in boost may be from the waste gate moy opening fast enough. So that's prob why it sees 13 pounds for a brief moment.

14-15psi on pump gas on a stock motor cobra is probably mid-high 500s. Sounds like some good runs.

Was hoping a Cobra would post up with their thoughts. Seems like those are the numbers I have found looking at similar builds. I know my car is probably quite a bit lighter than his too, but mine must be putting down some decent power through the auto.

auto trans hides alot of power. Especially when you get it dyno'd with the converter unlocked. Soooooo, when are you getting a 9" or s60 in that thing?
