Default 2004 Mach 1 vs 2004 GTO

Driving home from work I come across a yellow 5.7L GTO. It's in the middle of town so I know that there won't be any play. I follow him out of town on the 4 lane highway and we are stuck behind traffic. Knowing that I have a more open highway up ahead and that he is in my lane I figured that he would be taking my turn which he did.

We are sitting at the light with him in the right turn lane with one SUV in front of him and two cars in front of me in the left hand turn lane. The light goes green and the SUV is a little slow off the line. I took the turn a little sharp and barked the tires and that got his attention. I got in the right lane in front of the SUV while the GTO tried to do the same but the SUV pulled up beside the car that was in front of me. I kept cool just going with the flow of traffic trying not to run away from the guy. The GTO driver was a little upset based on how he was a little close to the bumper of the car in front and then again of the SUV when he changed lanes again. The SUV got the hint, sped up and changed lanes in-between the two cars that were originally in front of me.

At this point I sped up in front of the first car in the left lane and waited on the GTO. The GTO got on the gas and I dropped into third at 65mph. I'm thinking I'm either going to hit the gas as he goes by or see if he matches speeds for a three honk. Well he started to do a flyby and once his rear bumper was at my hood I hit it. I rounded out third at 90 even with him and nailed fourth pulling away hard. By 110-115 I was two to three cars out and hit the brakes.

At the next light about a half mile up I hear,
"Your car is loud as ****. What the hell is done to it?"
"Cammed. Are you stock?"
"Cold air intake and catback exhaust. Have a good one."

Truth is I had a brick under the gas pedal so I could only move it a few millimeters to make it somewhat fair.

Have not seen you post a thread in a while. Good kill and glad to see you still have your car and running it.
By the way, what cams do you have? FR500, Comps or Crower?

The weak ones, FR500. I have the baby seat mod now so I don't get many opportunities anymore when I don't have a passenger.

Got ya..Priorities. I can understand that now that you are sporting the baby seat mod. LOL
Next month, I am having the Comp Cams 106300 installed so I was just curious which cams you were running and how you like them. I know the FR500 are on the small side in term of lift.

Agreed...Cams on a 4v (cams/springs/retainers) plus the install can get expensive. I just got the quote.
This MACH will also stay NA. I am actually curious how well I can get this car to run with an NA setup. After I reach that point, than I will add a 100 shot but have no plans on adding a SC.

The cost comes from the 4 cams, Comp Cams 106300 - $1200, spring/retainers (if over .450 lift) $550,

(2)Tensioners - $60, (2)cam bolt, gaskets - ~$100, re-tune $350, oil change
Total: $3650 with parts & labor (not sure of total hrs)

That is taking into consideration that everything is new. The cams/springs can be bought cheaper On Ebay or MACH1Registry (new in the box).
The labor also includes dropping the motor, removing the timing chain cover, replacing the tensioners and degreeing the cams. There are cheaper shortcuts. Just depends on the shop.

I bought my cams used with new springs for $1100 and installed them myself. Time consuming but not hard.

Oh and unless someone hates to hear the lope of a cammed car I don't see the reason to put in Fr500 cams. I mean the specs on them are not that much more aggressive than stock cams.

Meh considering the route I went I get not going extreme. I had the cc306 in my lt1 and was more than happy to 'do the stupid thing' and put in a minor cam upgrade this time around. Spent 200.00 and a few hours of my own time... Well worth it IMHO

I got the whole FR500 valve train and cams for $800. I needed all of it (even replacement cams) and that was the cheapest route.

Agreed Mark. The specs on the FR500s are close to stock. However, if someone did not want to purchase springs/retainers and wanted to avoid a tune, the FR500s or even Comp Cams 106060 or 100s are a good alternative to say a 106300 or 400. Just depends on what you want to spend. Me personally, if I am going into the motor, I'd rather put something a little more aggressive in there especially for the time and labor.

BTW, that is great price you got for your cams and springs. I recently found a set of just the cams for $850 but unfortunately, was a little late on the deal.
