Anyway, to answer your question, yes. A converter will help you a lot from a roll if you get a big enough stall speed. Granted, any stall will help above stock, but the bigger you are willing to go the more gains you will see, espically from a roll. There are pros and cons to the big stalls though, so I would suggest that you do a search in the drivetrain section for an idea of what you're looking for/willing to put up with.
I have a 3500 stall. I like Yank brand 'verters for LS1s. Yank also has a very helpful website that can teach you all of the specfics of stall 'verters. You might find it very helpful www.converter.cc
