Default 97 cobra

Well my buddy finally bought a car that isn't an import, but ended up with a 97 cobra(tried my best to get him to buy an f bod but no luck). He's already ordered an x pipe, underdrive pulleys and some 4.10's. should he concern me? I can't lose to him cause we talk to much **** at work.

no not really, some LT1's i've seen run into low 13's, and he's got a few mods so im sure he'll be ahead of the cobra. Try to get those gears up

I've got the gears in my garage I'm just in the middle of moving so I haven't had time to put them in, what do the 97 cobras usually run?

when i had my 97 trans am ws.6 (m6, 3.42)with just free mods and k&n flowmaster cat back i raced my friends 98 cobra vert, 50 roll on the highway pulled on him pretty good by 80 he was 5 cars back, now i could drive pretty well, and he is a good driver. the cobra was stock save for some type of mustang intake thing and exhaust, obvioulsy he was about 200 pounds heavier than me in the vert, also my lt1 seemed to run better than most (loose by 1-1/2-2 cars by 90mph to ls1fbods). so with your mods and if you can drive you will def win, if possible race from a light i think you will have the advantage from a stop bc with a peak torque in the mid 2,000 rpm range and good tires, well 4.10's or not his cobra wont pulll you. now if you got 2.73 gears not the 3.23's i would be sketchy about racin him.

i thought that those cobra's ran like low 14's or so, it shouldn't be that much of a gap between you two, although i strongly believe u'll have the edge

97 cobras usually ran low 14's stock. with gears,x-pipe, & pulleys he should be mid 13's, then add some sticky tires might be a disappointing race for an LT1

A friend of mine has a 96 cobra. Exhaust, intake, gears, chip/tune. He ran a 14.2 lol. And he can drive a stick. He's pissed off haha

From my personal experience this can go either way. Race him from a dig, you'll have the advantage against his DOHC motor, it's really peaky and loves to rev. You'll take him out of the hole and he'll try to catch up, but I don't think he'll make it. Stock vs. Stock the LT1s were a little faster than the cobras, the cobras having 305 FWHP and LT1s putting down about 310-315 FWHP.

He has no power down low, even with his stick. Race from a dig and you'll have him. Just get those gears in and you're golden. without the gears he might take you.

well I was going to run him tonight even without the gears in and my left rear caliper frozen, but his check engine light came on on him so he wasn't up for it, but on the plus side I slaughtered some moron in an early 90's accord with an enormo wing and decals(approx. 200 hp worth ) on the way home

He probably needs to invest in some MIL eliminators for his X-pipe!

That 4.6 just needs some 4.30 gears and a sticky tire and it'd be a challenge for a (strong) stock LS1.

If by challenge you mean still loosing by a car to a car and a half then sure, it'd be a challenge...

Throw a suspension under it, with a good driver vs a sub par driver in the ls1 and I could see it going the other way.

LOL. Some of these comments are funny.

A 96-98 DOHC car is a very good match for a like-modded LT1, and not that far off an LS1 - when properly driven (admittedly hard to do). Personally, my old 98 Cobra went 13.6 @ 104 bone stock (stock tires). I never modded before selling it for a 99 T/A. However, a few have dipped into the 11's with bolt-ons, and one has gone as quick as 11.3 with stock internals (no power adder).

Cant be true, if its not a LT1/LS1 it is impossible to reach 11's with anything else...f-bodies never seem to lose on this site, unless its to a motorcycle or another "MORE HEAVILY MODDED" F-body
