Default First Race/Kill; "built 5.0 mustang"

Well, as I pulled into a parking lot, I noticed a good looking 5.0. So, I figured I would go talk to him and see whats he's got. He tells me that the car is only a couple of months old to him and he just got finished building the motor. I asked what was done to it and he told me that he wasn't sure, his dad was the car guy and he was just getting into it but it was a "built 5.0." We both went our seperate ways.

An hour later, me and a friend were putting a shifter handle in his car parked next to mine and the 5.0, and the guy starts to walk back to his car. We started talking again and decided to run. He said that he dynoed 306 and was hoping for 12.6 at the track, so I was expecting to get slaughtered. Not to mention the nice lope the cam had at idle. Sounded MEAN!

First race, he had no traction and I pulled him out the hole so bad he never shifted out of first.

Second race, I agreed to a roll (10mph). 3 honks, first gear started to pull on him, second gear finished him off, third gear rubbed it in

Third race, I told him to just nail it where ever he would like from a roll, and I would give him the jump. So, he nails it, and I let him go until his rear quarter pannel was at my window and nailed it. Through first I made up the difference, Second gear was stronger this time and pulled even more, and by the end of third gear I didn't even have to look back in order to get back into the correct lane.

All in all, I met a cool guy with a nice car and had a good ole' time.

Shouldnt a 306 whp fox body pull better than that? Sounds like if you ran it for a 1/4 you would have had several lengths on it. You have a stock ss so 13.0 flat-ish give or take. That makes his car mid to high 13s maybe low 14s doesnt it? So he basically a stock 5.0 rebuild with a cam. Am I way off base here?

At least he wasn't cocky and started making up excuses. All in all, you met a cool person and had fun, that's what it's all about.

Hey joewee - nice s-10, I have one too

just because it had a 5.0 doesn't necessarily mean it was a fox body, could've been a mid 90's GT, he didnt specify, but perhaps he will

Yes, it was a fox body style. And I was preparing myself for an @ss whooping. He had a major weight advantage, especially since my friend was along for the ride with me. Also, he said that he would only race once because he was almost out of gas; my tank was almost full. He had bad traction issues on the first two races, and I did notice the front of the car dive every time he shifted. I consider myself an average driver, some people have told me that I shift fast and hard though. Maybe I'll post a vid when I get time of a 1/4 mile run to get some other opinions on my driving skills.

It very well could have been. But it sure sounded mean! He did tell me that it was a custom grind made by a local shop. He had tried a Comp 305e (I think those were the numbers), but it didn't idle well, so he had a custom grind made similar to that one. Maybe it was a 305a?

My car wont hook at 10mph roll in 1st...im less than 300rwhp im pretty sure. Sounds like he fudged his dyno numbers imho or i jsut have crappy tires Anywho, my car pulls like mad up top and so i doubt he has what he says he has. My car is pretty much like an LS1 in the powerband dept.

If he has stock heads he is doing nothing but sounding mean at an idle.

engine was probly rebuilt and the displacement was 306ci. Like said, bolt ons, a cam (not so useful on stock heads), and traction problems.

Nevertheless, sweet kill.

This was "the friend" riding with Mike L. My predictions were like Mike's considering his HUGE weight advantage, and very similar power numbers- I thought we were dead meat. I think Mike drove better than this guy off the line, but even when both cars had good traction his lead did nothing but grow.

I'm very curious to see Mike's car run at our local track with some drag radials. I have a '98 Z with full bolt-ons, M6, and 4.10:1 gears, and let me just tell you that Mike's bone stocker runs neck-in-neck with my car up to around ~100. I think he got a factory ringer. I'd venture to say a lid and long tubes, and he's deep, deep into the 12s.

Let me say that I'm glad Mike wasn't "holding" about $500 of my money as excited as he was after this race, or my money might have turned into his long tubes.

I guess his idea of "BUILT" 5.0 is different from mine.. ....A built 5.0 should do a little better than that.....my guess is with Stanger88, rebuilt with maybe a small cam and those shitty E7TE heads

You know, everyone (not on this site) REALLY disses my GT40P heads BIG TIME. I dont know why, i looked up some flow #'s and they flow almost identical to LT1 heads and 99+ PI heads. Thats like me bolting LT1 heads to my 302, how is that bad flow #'s????? Maybe I am just naive. (Yes I know AFR flows better, but flow VELOCITY is MUCH deminished). My GT40P's duplicate LT1 head flow #'s with 1.84/1.46 valves as i recall...can we say high velocity?

PS. the E7 truck heads flow about 150cfm on the intake side at .500 lift.
GT40P is about 190intake/140-150 exhaust
LT1 and PI 99+ 4.6L heads are about the same as the GT40P's
LS1 heads flow close to 250cfm intake stock, not sure on exhast
the new 3V mustang heads flow arond 230-240ish cfm intake stock.

I hope that i did not make it sound like i was dissing your heads ....i was agreeing with you about the fact he probably had stock heads......Everyone has to remember that for a LONG time GT40(basicly a "P" head) was all us 5.0 guys had ..I have a HUGE amount of experience with small block fuelie fords....I remember my first set of heads was a set of "new" GT40 heads off a 93 cobra...and with a little port work i was posting some pretty impressive timeslips for those little iron heads

I think people diss on them because they don't flow like a good set of trick flow or AFR's do.
