C5 Z06 vs C6 Z06 - Story from the track yesterday The weather was low 80's and humid at Bradenton Motorsports Park by the time I arrived at 10:30 am. Some fellow Corvettes had a bracket race session going on, but I just wanted to make a couple of passes to see what the car can do in my home state of FL after living in Colorado.
While I was sitting in the lanes for my first pass, a black on black 2006 Z06 pulls up and parks across from the staging lanes. It was my first up close inspection of a new Z06. Simply awesome machine. Told the guy he had a nice car on his hands and he said he was gonna run it and see what it could do. He was way cool.
My first run was a 12.6 @ 114.51. Not bad for a 385 hp '01. He ended up running a 12.3 @ 121 on his first run. Since he had little traction, a fellow lent him a set of drag radials (295/35 18) on polished Z06 rims. Near the end of the sessions and in the heat of the day around 2:30 pm, we lined em up.
Before we go any further let me just say that his Z06 was bone stock and he had only had it a few days. On the other hand, I've had four and a half years of being behind the wheel of my Z06. Performance mods for me are not major, 2 degrees more WOT timing, 170 thermostat, Blackwing filter, and a 2002 H pipe. This should put me near the 2002-2004 Z06 performance wise.
The oil burning 2001 385 hp Quicksilver Z06 and myself go around the burnout box and head to the line. The 2006 Z06 does a burnout to heat his drag radials. I can hear that car's engine rev eventhough my windows are up and I'm wearing a helmet. "Uh, oh, I know it's gonna be bad for me. I know he's got me on tires and mph, I'm just gonna try and not miss a shift," was going through my head.
He thrashed the 60 foot with a 1.849 to my 2.237 as I spun a little with too much rpms off the line. He had me all the way. 5.682 to his 5.146 at 330.' The 1/8th mph was not too far off either: 91.04 to the almighty 2006's 94.48. I was shifting as fast as I could but he was uncatchable and looked good doing it. 12.739 @ 113.69 just couldn't hold up against a faster, better tired 11.855 @ 116.44.

However, I was surprised to be within 2.75 mph at the end. I think the heat was getting the better of the LS7 than my LS6. I pulled the fuel rail covers to help get some of the heat out in the staging lanes. Perhaps, the 2006 Z06 factory computer aggressively pulls timing when it's hot?
It was nice to meet some folks down there racing their vettes and even more exciting to participate in a race of the first of the last two generations of Z06's...

PS- My lowly, lowly 385hp Z06 dynoed 360/363 right after a 2002 Z06 dynoed 355 or 357- I don't remember actually how much lower and this was before I made any mods other than a Blackwing...This is one of the rare 2001 Z06's that did not dyno 335-345 as everyone expects.

his mph died at top end becouse he had traction . I am guessing he was running low pressure . If he were to add some more pressure to the tires he would loose a little on the 60 foot but gain some of the mph back. That is some good number both of you are running especailly the 2006 being stock running 11s

Yeah, typically you do lose mph when gaining traction. Never quite understood it myself, but I've experienced it. I don't know if he should have lost 4+ mph because of a couple tenths gain on the 60 foot. My Turbo Buick lost a 3-4 mph when I switched from 275/ 50 BFG DR's to 28 x 9 MT Slicks, but I did gain a half second in the 60 foot when I did that
Not too impressive for a drag radial equipped 06 Z IMO.... Trending Topics

Seems like you had a good time. I was suprised that AT THE EXTREMELY LOW MPH on the 2006 Z06. I heard of a stock one running 10.9@126 on drag radials 
I just want to say that you have a wonderful website
and it really gives justice to the Z06. My father has a 2002 Z06 that I will be buying in a couple of months. I just cant wait!!!!!

Guys...Theres nonthing wrong with the C6Z..
His first pass was a 12.3 at 121 mph...
Most guys will do hundreds of passes in there stock 02 Z's on prepped tracks in awesome weather and maybe.....maybe...MAYBE pull a 12.3 "ONCE"..
And it aint gonna be at 121 mph...117 is about the highest you'll ever here about.
That 12.3 at 121 is the best many mags were able to get out of the Viper SRT coupe...
Considering the weather was in the 80's.....12.3 at 121 is AMAZING...
tHE 116 mph dose seem low....But then again the now hot engine and slicks tell the tale of why this happened.
